selling a gun

I have a high end shotgun I'd like to sell. who has done this and which website did you use? What FFL did you use (local gunsmith) and what did they charge? Any other hints/tips on this?

Depends on what you mean by high end

For a true collectors piece or limited market gun. You might want to consign it to one of the better auction houses like Julia's - they have the connections and audience to get it noticed by the right buyers. Of course you'll need to pay commission

You can sell it on your own on a site like Gunbroker -their site explains the fees and you can ship it to the buyers FFL to complete the sale

Most local gun shops will not have the traffic to properly market a special gun

Do some research on Gunbroker. Guns international or Guns America

See what they have been selling for (selling not asking)

Get some clear pictures and post it

If you do not want to handle it yourself, use the FFL finder to locate a shop in your zip code area and see if they will list it on consignment. Many do offer the service

In my experience Armslist is similar to craigslist, including the scammers. I would say that the parallel to Gunbroker is Ebay. Yes, there are some scammers but fewer and more protection for the parties involved.

My two cents worth, would be armslist and craigslist if the deal is face to face and cash. If it involves shipping I would go with Gunbroker and ebay.

I have only been a buyer with Gunbroker as I have a disease that does not let me sell a gun once I own it. Every firearm I tried to purchase on Armlist the deal fell apart when it was time to meet and exchange money. By the way if meeting face to face I always choose the local police department parking lot, and give them a heads up. I have also purchased a gun through a local classified and the deals appeared to be a little too sweet. The PD ran the serial number, make and model to see if it was hot. They did this at no charge. This did mean knowing the serial number in advance of the sale.

Please note that this advise is based solely on my experience and comfort level and at 2 cents is grossly over priced.

I have that same condition where i cannot sell a gun. I have a similar condition where i always need "just one more" gun in the collection.

I've used SGW myself as a buyer and had good luck. Not the biggest audience but they are specifically looking for shotguns.

As a dealer, we will not receive guns from a individual as we have no way to verify the seller. Have had problems getting proper ID and phone #.
Receiving from a dealer, he id's the seller. 90% of all guns deals are fine. Verify your seller with phone #, drivers license photo and bill of sale. Buyer beware...

Unfortunately the Double Gun market is very soft. I just sold a nice Husqvarna for a couple hundred dollars less than what I paid for it 4 years ago. With a double gun you will probably do better on Guns International or DoubleGunShop.com. The latter has a nice for sale section for double guns only. You may wish to post it here provided you have enough posts to qualify for listing. IMO Gun Broker or Arms List would not be my first choice as a listing venue. Although perfectly legal many FFL dealers will not accept a shipment from a non FFL seller so you have to get an FFL holder involved if you do sell and need to ship. Everything I sell even locally goes through an FFL just ensure the buyer can legally own the firearm.
Good Luck

Personally - I am not sure the market is that soft - well maybe- i have only bought two so far this year

the nice ones that goes up for sale on the collector's boards I belong to seem to move as well as ever

a Husqvarna is a good solid gun but I don't think they are all that well known so the market may be limited

the OP's Ruger carries a better known name, so marketing it may be easier

I totally agree that the sxs market is very soft. I do shows and have not sold one in a few years. Most of the new generation wants black or camo stocks. I'm ole school and still shoot a wood stock.
Sxs are starting to get a little popular for the older generation shooting ducks. A few of the duck boat people are trying it out.

I may well have a tarnished perspective - I almost never see a single barrel gun in the hand of the guys I shoot with, even O/U's are rare

a mixed bag of redheads, mallards and a Canada fell to my LC Smith Longrange yesterday while my shooting partner for the day was doing very well with a DH Parker

Today my FFL should be receiving a grade 1 Ithaca NID super 10 - sadly arriving .a day after my last hunt for the year - it will have to
suffer the indignity of being a clays gun for 10 months

so - i see doubles just purchased and some sold to cover the trades seems like every time we get together, so i may not have a wide view

It's an awful shame I'm in the financial situation that I currently am or I would be all over this gun. It's rare a gold label comes up for sale. Is it straight or pistol grip? Barrel length?
