Happy New Year what's on your workbench

Back to it. Let the chips fall where they may! Then sweep them up before they get tracked all over the house.

Sat down the other evening and knocked out a few heads. Chose basswood for a little more strength considering the thin bills of these guys. Was time to finish up the rest of this half of my "Erie Rig"! Bodies tomorrow.

Pat,
I am jealous I have yet to see a speck in my hunting career. Do you pluck and roast them I am told they are really good eating. Like the pickleweeds as well.

Little progress yesterday. Hollowing, Glue and details cuts and sanding to come next.

So I carved a new head and knocked this one out as well.

My carving companion for the afternoon. He is learning how to lay down which I plan to train into a hand signal in the future.

This little guy started out of the flattie-thread discussion that showed up here last week. Pauly had an original In-Vadm golden eye so we knocked out a copy. I'd say this project has about 1 hour of work into it. Quick and easy;)

Here's the real one:

Here's the imposter:
Dave,

I have spent many of season with birds falling to those In-Vadm...I am certain that is the only decoys you would need to put out in large number rig of decoys...

Nice Benchmarking technique...

Regards,
Kristan

Kristan,

I know for a fact that those In-Vadm's work like a charm! A small, light-weight keel should be all that's required to float that bad boy beautifully on my lake.

Dave,if you don't mind saying what are the dimensions on the "flattie" ? I would think 2" styrofoam, burlaped with a keel would work well. Even i should be able to carve a breast rester head like that.
Bill.

Thanks Dave, i'll put them on my to do list i have black cork to use up first.

You could cut 4" in half then put a board on the bottom to make the flatties. I used 4" for wigeon, but only need the 3 3/4" (3" cork + 3/4 board) for the pattern. So I cut an inch of height off each one. Then I glued up the left overs and made two more.

Andy, I think using black cork for flatties would be a waste[imo], think i will save it for real decoys. A sheet of pink foam 2" thick would make a whack of flatties. A feature diver hunters should relish. The head shown could probably be cut from 2x6's and shaped very little. They are ugly little fellas for sure but in numbers they should be effective.
Bill.

attempting to hold onto my 13' goal of improving my birds. spent more time on these two this weekend than I used to spend on ten.

Brandon, your a machine!

Dave, I like the looks of the GE, real folky.

Tom, looks like your off to a good start of meeting your goal.

Some stuff I finished up just before the holidays.

Also started a run of Turkey box calls. Found some nice Cuban mahogany and Purpleheart. Looking forward to trying them out and see how they sound.

its hard to follow Jode but i have been getting some of my homework done. sorry for the phone pics.
i wanted to have the GE's done for the end of the season but i guess i will just roll them into the goal of having a good diver rig for next year, Which is only a few months away!!! (you have to be optimistic or an iceless winter will make you go into a spiraling depression)
