any folks out there using behr ultra latex to paint decoys. they make hardener to add for added durability, anyone been adding hardener? tanks!

Good morning, Frank~

Yes - I use Behr paints on gunning birds. I did not know about the hardener - certainly worth trying. I'm assuming it works with flat paints and does not add any sheen.

Of course, I just this minute got back from a Home Depot - a half-hour away....

All the best,

Just did some searching and was unable to find it, could you provide a link? Also, have you personally used it? I would love to hear a review of it

I use the Behr ultra on crab and conch pot buoys, it holds up incredibly well with constant exposure to salt water, and sun. No reason it won't work on decoys

just saw it as a separate product on the web. you add it to the paint. I will inquire when I go to home depot this week. they also have a deck and porch version of the ultra. not sure what the diff. is or if all the different colors are available.
I have lot of questions for them. also wondered if the behr ultra sticks if painted over oil, and if primer is recommended when painting over old paint, plastic heads, etc.? I have been sanding old heads to rough up the paint and plastic then priming with Zinsser oil.

Frank~

I have posted a bunch of my experiences - both here and on my own site.

I have had no problems with the Behr sticking to oil primers or spar varnish. I sometimes just use an undercoat of Behr as my prime coat. I like to do this is colors close to the finish colors so wear will not reveal some unfortunate tone. Generally, I use the oil or varnish on cork or wood birds - where sealing is paramount. Plastic birds (like Herter's) usually get a latex prime.

Of course, scuffing any shiny-smooth plastic with sandpaper (80 120 grit) is never a bad practice before painting.

thanks for all the dope. I have been an oil user but behr give so many color choices and is low toxin as I am working in my basement, so thought its switch. oil paints dry a bit harder but the curability of ultra seems to be great. I have been using Zinsser primer as it is the dope as far as adhesion. it will stick to ceramic tile. as I convert to behr ultra I still have some oil so it seems coating over each other is ok. I'm a couple hundred birds in on paint but most are plastic foam or burlap. results have been great so far. thanks for the info!

have not used hard coat, I will be going to home D tomorrow and will ask about it. I think there deck and porch version of ultra has hardener in it. be a lot of questions for them tomorrow! HERE IS THE LINK.

THANKS FOR PUTTING UP ALL THE BEHR ULTRA CODES. GOING TO SAVE ME TON OF TIME PICKING THROUGH THE 100S OF COLOR CARDS!!!!!!

Any one use the Behr though a air brush. I like painting with an air brush, normally use oil base but really like the color choices and sample jar size.

ask the folks at the paint counter at home depot. they said you can thin but only 8oz to the gallon. that would be 1/2oz to an 8oz sample. they mentioned spraying but don't know if they were thinking the little hobby spray guns, I have not used a spray gun myself.
