travel ideas in the PNW, anyone local?

If you go all the way into CA, when you head back north take US199 up the Smith River to Cave Junction, OR. Very scenic with the big trees and river pools. Coastal OR has hundreds of small state parks. Most are beach access and day parking only. Most are scenic. My OR list of things to...

    Hunting Emperor Geese in Alaska

UPDATE The Alaska Board of Game accepted a late proposal in January 2017 to add Emperor geese hunting season. The migratory bird co-management council submitted a proposal that allowed for no non-resident take under a registration permit system. The Alaska Board of Game is all about the...

    Hunting Emperor Geese in Alaska

Don't get me started on the Alaska Native's "stewardship" of the land. Many of them are just poachers. They want theirs and anyone else can go pound sand, even their fellow tribe members up river. The screw you attitude in the YK delta gets old fast. the duck stamp thing is partly the fault...

    Hunting Emperor Geese in Alaska

True for the caribou farther to the north in unit 23. And lets not forget the constant political action of Ahtna corporation through Congressman for Life Don Young over management of the Nelchina caribou in the central part of the state. The Federal subsistence boards are separate from the...

    H.R.621

622 is rumored to be pulled soon as well, but as of this morning it is still active in the House in the Agriculture and the Natural Resources committees. I know guys in CA are pushing hard and bringing up all the pot farms on USFS lands. Their local county guys are at reduced staff and only the...

    H.R.621

Based on social media pressure, Jason C. announced he is going to pull 621 today. He still brought up Clinton administration in 1997, but fails to mention that outdoors folks like us didn't like it back then either. Now if we can get them to reverse the federal lands value amendment placed...

    H.R.621

One of the things I had to do was read up on the background for this bill. It's based on data submitted to a committee in 1997. Very specific requirements for the land that is part of the disposal action. This bill is taking action on the 1997 data. Its a greasy slope once this gets...

Building an Aluminum BBIII - what modifications would you make circa 2017

Its made out of western red cedar 1.75" by .75" trim pieces from a box store. I cut dados in the ends to mount the side rails to so that they hang over the coaming. I used polyurethane glue, but I recommend Titebond III. I have had a couple of other projects come apart in the weather due to UV...

Building an Aluminum BBIII - what modifications would you make circa 2017

For bobbing the corners - when you tilt the motor into its shallow water operation position, the prop will contact the inner corners of the sponsons to each side of the motor well when you are turning. This happens if you build the stern to the plan dimensions. If you mess up by two inches and...

So some questions about designing/building a sneakbox

If you are a minimalist hunter, 12-15 decoys, one dog, and seldom with another hunter, then a Bluebill would be perfect. It will handle quite a bit of water/wave action. And there is no rule that you have to twist the throttle all the way around till it stops, so how fast the boat could travel...

Have I mentioned the crazy lady that lives next to my workshop?

Does she have a teenage grand daughter? That's what I first thought of based on her request. I'm told these devices are best made from steel, which requires a forge, and some additional tools to go with the forge.

    Great Salt Lake under attack

http://www.courthousenews.com/2016/11/04/conflicting-interests-target-declining-great-salt-lake.htm This popped up today. Well written, with some external links to published papers about the situation. The people that want to divert water need to consider what occurred with the Aral Sea in...

Hunting/fishing license data hacked into, in three states

Being a Fed and having BCBS insurance, all my PII is in the public domain by now. I have five free ID monitoring services. Two of those are for the rest of my life thanks to OPM an my agency. Now, thanks to buying a 3-day Idaho fishing license at a Walmart in 2004, I have a sixth ID monitoring...

    Laminated plywod vs lumber

Yes you can. I had several long pieces cut off the hull sections which I laminated together to form the keel log rather than use a solid piece of lumber. It was about two inches wide by the time I was done building it up.

Stich and glue conferted to hard chime

To hold the hull shape for a hard chine you will need more frames. More frames means more weight. Wood and glass boats use the composite over the wood core to form a strong engineered beam. You take away this strength you will need to add it back into the boat using frames. If you don't its...

Stich and glue conferted to hard chime

Lots of extra work to make a weaker joint and a heavier boat. I like old school wood working and boat construction skills, but I would not try to push something modern back into the 1890's. That's a mess of headaches I don't want. If you want to build a hard chined boat then look up Zack...
