    New - Boat build advice

One other comment. Since this site was started a lot of use-time and data has rolled in. Sam, along with us, has incorporated that into the new designs and builds. We are smarter today than in 1998 when this all started for us. My Scaup build was improved upon when I built my Broadbill and...

    New - Boat build advice

My boats were built back in the day when two-part foam was the standard. I haven't had any issues but sure as heck wouldn't build another using that stuff. Deck hatches and removable flotation material is the way to go. As for the increase from 3/8" to 1/2" ply I suspect the flexing in the...

    New - Boat build advice

Ed My advice for no foam or sealed areas under the floor is based on physics, not CG regs. I've had people disagree with me over they years, but I'm not changing my position. Archimedes was no idiot, and Jeff Smith walked me through the principles many years ago. In a conversation with Sam...

    New - Boat build advice

The rigors and process vary from state-to-state. My state is fairly lax and CG requirements were not assessed to my knowledge. I think they were mostly concerned about obvious issues and placement of the hull ID plate (sticker).

That is a very large area to completely seal. Temp variations will cause it to pressurize and depressurize and who knows what that would do to the hull. Could lead to bulging and cracking after enough hot/cold cycles. God, here I go again. Foam has no place in the floor of a boat. A swamped...

    New - Boat build advice

That was how I did my Scaup. The above is my Black Brant. Before I sold my Scaup I had to rework the knees into chine-to-chine bulkheads. I call them cockpit cutout bulkheads The trough, as I called it, did allow water to pass but so do limber holes and I think what Tod showed above is a...

RM I direct water to a drain plug in front of the motor well with limber holes in each bulkhead and gravity. Plus I recently installed a bilge pump because the very center of the hull is lower than the motor well drain plug.

Tod Nothing to speak of. I have posted the pictures of it, in particular the interior, many times though so Henry might have seen them or can certainly search for them. They are in Scott Gilliland's Broadbill repair thread...

"Eric's offset keelsons to allow water to flow down the lowest point." I'm not sure what you mean by this. Which boat of mine are you looking at? The way I built my Black Brant is way better than what I did in my Scaup.

Wow, that was one old sprig. I bet he is super excited for that duck. Even if he hunts many years it might be hard to top that one.

ISO - Herter's Model Canada Bluebill (or Redhead) - in-use paint would be fine

Steve You might keep an eye on hibid for that decoy. Vintage decoys are regularly at auction there and the inventory is constantly changing. If you find one that doesn't offer shipping I bet someone here who lives nearby would help get it to you. https://hibid.com/lots?q=decoy&status=OPEN

Bud Miles BBSB - Central WA

Gregg She really looks to be in top shape and I know Bud Miles boats are highly respected on the east coast. Some lucky west coaster is going to be thrilled to hunt her. I'm surprised nobody has jumped on it yet. A good price on a BBSB in tip top shape should be gone by now.
