    2 man pontoon boat

Blake, this may be more engineering and not what you want, but... I know some guys have taken pontoon boats and then put a jon boat in between the pontoons, built a deck and flapper boards. Low profile and stable. You aren't sitting in a "blind" as such, and it would allow the use of a...

Painted red is throwing me for a scull boat... Is it maybe an ice boat without the runners and sail?

Yes...a riffle hitch. It's done elsewhere, but Iceland it seems to be almost an art form bordering on religion. I'd love to go fish the Margaree! My understanding about Nova Scotia is that the rivers have a good deal of public access, unlike other countries which require a guide and/or you...

Iceland? Wow. I've seen some of the footage from Iceland and it looks amazing. Crazy tiny flies, too....stuff more for stream trout than you would think big salmon. I went with my Dad. He's been to Newfoundland and up into Canada above Sault Ste. Marie chasing them. I'd love to to to the...

Eric, No idea, other than that 1999-2000 season was a barn burner....I mean, one of the best seasons in a lot of people's hunting history. I think there was a record flight, and the weather worked out to provide one of those glory years. After that, the numbers just started climbing. And...

Craig, it has ruined so many outdoor sports, in my opinion. There is an area I grew up fishing that wound up getting all but ruined by the flyfishing craze, three magazine articles, and three different books about the area...and the third author basically said, "the first two guys didn't even...

It's a no-win for AGFC. The 4 am departure rule combined with the "me first" creates the situation where people are going to do stupid things....for a duck. But the 4 am rule came about because people were sleeping out in the holes and "holding" them, which doesn't actually give the ducks a...

I get it. Wingshooting is more ethical, but what's better...a duck being crippled and the dog chasing it, or a single shot on the water that kills it dead? Dale Bordelon in Louisiana unapologetically shoots his ducks on the water the way the market hunters did it in the early 1900's...and when...

Arkansas has never had "first come" or minimum distance - it used to be respect and common sense. And sometimes that common sense was learned at the end of a boat paddle if you set up downwind of a group and pulled their ducks or shot their swing. On several of the WMA's when I was younger...

Ok. I'm going to make some assumptions and share a few thoughts, and we all know what opinions are like. First, I suspect they were scouting the day before, and when he says they slept in the boat they did so in the line at the launch, NOT in the woods. Arkansas WMA's don't allow boats in...

    On this day in 1940...

The wind blew and the duck hunters died on the Upper Mississippi in the Armistice Day Storm. MacQuarrie's and others' accounts are worth reading. Heroism and tragedy. Easy to forget with mild, drought conditions in so many places that Mother Nature can turn on a dime. Stay safe out there...

Readings on the Armistice day storm?

Worth, I didn't know that DH was in that storm...that's amazing. There's a decoy collector that has some decoys (carved by Heck Whittington, maybe?) that were actually out on the water and survivors of the Armistice Day storm. I am pretty sure they are Whittington's decoys because they are his...

Readings on the Armistice day storm?

He did. Since he was an outdoor writer for a newspaper up there, he wrote about it. When you read the accounts, it's a horror story. Sunny, warm day, hunters going out on the river mostly unprepared...then the wind starts, and the flocks of ducks coming down like crazy...then the temps start...

Lord...I wouldn't want to carry six hickory decoys...even hollow...much less try to carve it... With what they've done to our hardwoods here, "native" at this point is loblolly pine... I wouldn't mind cypress, but I've had good, dry cypress lumber check or split for no reason all of a sudden...

Nice. I haven't tried to find any tupelo in a few years; I have enough cedar and basswood to last me for a while yet, but I would still like to carve "native" species.

    Cedar for sneak box.

But cypress will add weight. Cedar is 24 lbs/cu ft, cypress is 32....30% more. You can get that here in Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc.; there are mills that could probably get boards with custom lengths up to 14', maybe longer.

Love those white oaks...3500 bf...wow. Enough to keep you for a year or two with various projects. You bring up a good point. If you are just buying tupelo blocks, there is NO way to know, and as a matter of fact, it was pretty common knowledge (historically) that the guys who cut it saved...
