An AWS walked into a bar...

It's true what they say about American Water Spaniels.

They are tough as nails, great family pets and smart. Pip is 10 weeks. He's piddling outdoors, but #2 is still a challenge. He's smart enough to know that it's wrong to go inside so he'll run into his pen and hide after the deed.

The breeders taught him how to retrieve and he's pretty good at it. When the pheasant wing is thrown he tries to launch out of my arms. He actually brings the wing back.

My duck season was lousy as I had too much work and warm weather to contend with but I am looking forward to the upcoming season. This AWS will be trained by then (famous last words).

Pics soon. Board was slow so I thought I would post.

Andrew, Since the AWS came originally from Wis , It's not unusual for them to walk into a bar.

Just make sure he doesn't drink Samuel Adams. You will ruin a good dog :) )

Andrew,

Sounds like you are havin' fun! Gerda indicated that she set aside a good pup for you. Post up picks when you can!

Ha, Pete. Nick, Yeah, the pup's a good one. Now if I can get the trainer to do his job (me).

Will post pics soon.

"we don't serve poodles in here."

Sorry about that. The humor meter is pretty low at 7:30am.

Glad to hear that your pup is doing well. from all I've heard, and from my own experience as well, you'll have quite a time figuring out his personality and then learning how to train him based on that. It's funny you mentioned in an earlier post that he's fearless. My AWS Mickey is the biggest chicken I've ever seen. Except when it comes to birds--he's all over them. But around the neighborhood, if he sees anything new, he doesn't like it. This morning I took him out to do his business and the neighbor had put a plow on the front of his truck. didn't like that one bit. Growled at it, barked, ran back and forth. The worst is garden gnomes. He's scared to death of them. Walks way around on the end of the leash and growls till we're well past. A couple of nights ago we were going down a new street and he saw a little buddha statue in someone's front lawn. That really set him off. Come to think of it, it was pretty scary. I don't think I'll go down that street again.

BTW, my favorite bar joke:

A grasshopper walks into the bar.
Bartender: "Hey, we have a drink named after you!"
Grasshopper: "Why would you name a drink Bob?"

Rick, Pip isn't afraid of anything, I wish he were ; ) We have a high step to get outside. He is as tall as each step x 2. So, he used to take his time and kind of shimmy down it, but, he figured out that if he leaps off, it's quicker. We don't let him do it because he's going to break something. It's akin to a human making a 10 foot tall leap.

A giraffe walks into a bar and announces... "the highballs are on me !!"

People under the age of 40 are probably scratching their heads - what's a highball?

Two chickens walked into a bar and all the other patrons were cows..one chicken said to the other "Gert, I didn't know this was a hay bar".

Andrew,

Great to hear you settled on a name . I knew "Spanky" was not going to work HAHAHa, I am already having duck withdrawls and it has only been 4 days , i got a goose permit to give that a try again but i am not sure how much time i am going to have , been real busy lately , we will see where a goose hunt will fit in the schedule . Give me a call Friday night , we can chat . Talk to you soon .

Ps. The wife would like to see the pup are you around this weekend ?

Dave

Lee, that made me laugh, very, very good.

David, you and Tracey are welcome anytime you want this weekend, just let me know. I'll call you from the car, I'm coming back from a meeting in NJ - late Friday.

I put the decoys away, including the brant. I never used the brant, never saw a brant this year. They should outlaw work.

Hillary Clinton walks into a bar with a huge parrot on her head.

The bartender asks "Wow, where did you get that thing ?"

The parrot says "Chappaqua".

I'm dusting off the training gear, and I tried to fire up old Sparky (a Tritronics 50 collar) and the collar is toast, won't charge, won't turn on. I had troubles with it years ago and they replaced the battery, I had to fight for it. It has low mileage.

Obviously, I can't use the collar on the pup, but the big one requires some re-training. I sent a note to Tritronics informing them of my plight with the hope that they will send along a new battery, but in the event that they don't, can you recommend a collar in the $200 range?

Thanks all.

Andrew

Andrew,

You can't go wrong with Dogtra. I have had a 1200NCP now for over 4 years. Built like a tank and warranty too boot. The reciever AND transmitter are waterproof - a MUST if you are training or hunting in marsh or in the rain. Price is perfect. This person has a bunch NIB on closeout but I am confused if this is truly the 1200NCP or 1200 NC model. The NCP model has a "page" function that vibrates to get the dogs attention without zapping the dog. Either way, it is a good deal IMHO.

Take Care!

Thanks Nick... I like that paging function, that's smart.

This dog is amazing. Are our dogs related? Comes when he is called. Almost house broken. Retrieves to hand.

Thanks, Andrew

Andrew,

If you can get the unit working call Tritronics. They offered me a trade-in deal for my old Tritronics collar when I went to purchase an additional one. Worth a call. I can not remember how much it since it was a year ago but it was an offer I did not pass up.

Thanks Howard. I sent an email to them yesterday. They have an opportunity to save a customer. If I had used it a ton and then it wore out, it wouldn't be an issue, but I gave up on it because it didn't work right. Thank God my dog "got it" so I didn't have to use it. I never once had to "shock" the dog, I used it on its lowest setting as a reminder - maybe 5 times.

This AWS is going to be a challenge... Huge heart, and very smart. Much smarter than the trainer ; )

I've been using the Micro-idt collar from DT Systems. It's waterproof and compact. Most of the e-collars are designed for fat-necked labs or chessies, and I wanted a smaller collar unit for the AWS. So far--16 months, about 150-200 field trips--it has worked great. The only drawback is that the range is limited--probably about 100 yards, certainly not the 500 yards they advertise. But I rarely have to give correction out that far anyway.

Andrew, Is it the Tritronics Sport 50? If so, I just ordered a replacement battery for mine from Gun Dog Supply and installed it myself. I think it was around 30 bucks with shipping. Hope you enjoy the AWS, I'm really happy with mine, but she sure has a different mind about training than my Lab did. Good Luck.

Man walks into a bar. "OUCH"

It is the sport 50. I sent them an email and they are diagnosing the problem. I didn't realize that one could buy a replacement battery for the collar. That would be cool, thanks.

Thanks Rick.

The pup took his first real woods walk today, he smelled everything in sight. Tried to keep up with the lab. This dog has heart that's for sure. I apologize for not posting pics, every time I get the camera out and try to point it, the dog is moving around too much.

Andrew,

I've had my sport 60 for several years and just replaced the battery in the collar this fall. I ordered mine directly from Tritronics.

Just go slow and be sure to gently clean the mating surfaces before reassembly. I used a bit of silicone grease on the sealing surfaces as added insurance against water intrusion.

The replacement battery will need to be charged for 14 hours before using. Complete intructions are included. Proper recharging after each use will greatly prolong the life of the rechargeable battery. I try to charge mine a couple times during the off season when I'm not using it. My brother-in-law had to replace his battery after only a couple years and he is pretty lax about proper recharging.
