Can't find mine, dag-nabbit!

Anyone have a set of RCBS .45 Long Colt dies (carbide or regular) they want to sell? I can't find mine anywhere and I have 300 rounds of brass to load. All I found in the box was the bullet seater die and I don't have a clue where the rest of the set went.

Thanks,

Dave

Hey Dave.Come over and help me find my heavy duty duck-bill push pole head, bring the brass and we'll load up that 45 Colt ammo on my Lock n load press in no time.I know how frustrating it can be,when you know you have it and can't find it.I remember my Dad doing the same thing I do now.Organized,we got to get organized.I'll shoot you a separate Email or call.3Dogs

I'll look at lunch and see..I think I still have a set that I used for my Winchester 94 consecutive serial numbered pair that I let go way too cheap.

That was some trip you made picking up your boat from Mark. Now that you have your new boat at home you can start rigging it out and try out that new ski motor you'll be putting on it.

Lee,

Judy's dad kept after me to tarde him my 1894 Winchester .45 L.C years ago. I can't even remember what he traded me for it now. I have been trying to locate another one at a decent price, but never seem to find one. They are now like hens teeth.

I did pick up an "EL Tigre" .44/40 and a Win. '92 in .25/20 at the Klamath Falls Gun Show back in 1991, but ofcourse someone offered me twice what I paid for them and they got turned into something else.

But, I do like to shoot the old .45 SA and when I recently bought new brass and casted up bullets.......I could not find the dang dies.

I have also been buying a box of 12 and 20 ga. all brass cases everytime I order anything from Midland fro shooting in my older guns. I have been slowly picking up antique reloading equipment on eBay and now I've got enough of it to reload 12 and 20 ga. B.P. shells which are a hoot to shoot.

You need 25-20 dies??? Had an pld savage bolt action 25-20 that someone offered me too much money for..still have brass and dies..do you need them?

Lee, is there ANY caliber gun that you have not owned at one time or another???? HAHAHA!

Thanks, but shortly after I sold the 1892 .25/20 I gave the dies and brass to one of my friends in Australia. BTW, if you ever get the urge to hunt or fish Australia, I know guys from Brisbane to Perth and from Darwin to Melborne.

Back in the '80's I had several of them come over to visit, hunt and go gold mining with me. They have plenty of wild pigs to shoot, but I don't think I ever wanted to shoot "Roo's or water buffalos, so I never took up their offers to hunt with them. Maybe do some opal digging at Lightning Ridge in N.S.W. or some nugget collecting with metal detectors down around Ballarat in Victoria.

Thanks,

Dave

I was looking through the stack of die boxes and see I have a set of 35 rem, 300 savage and 22-250..never owned guns chambered for them but loaded rounds for some buddies. I need to lengthen the throat on my 358 Hawk cause Fred Zeglin chambered it too short and the long bullets like ballistic tips have to be seated to deep to chamber..is that hard to do?

Not for a good gunsmith that has some chambering experience. Too bad the gun is not here at my place, I could take it just down the road to my buddy C. P. Donnely the gun maker and he could knock it out in no time. He's been a barrel maker for 45 years. He built my .338/06 with one of his premium barrels.

The LAST thing you ever want to do is have a throat so short that a long seated bullet touches the lands and groves. The pressures are so great when it does that......it can easily blow up the barrel as you well know.

Donnely always adds a bit of extra space in his chamberings so that you can load the longest of bullets, plus some target shooters find better accuracy at times by seating bullets out a bit farther than normal.

Judy's dad had one of those Model 1917's in .45 L.C. and by using those half moon clips you could shoot .45 ACP ammo in them. There are still a few of those half moon clips laying around here. Up in teh shop I have set-up all his old reloading equipment just the way he used to have it when we reloaded together. The only difference is with my stuff set-up, iy fills the 24 foot bench from one end to the other.

Now that the weather is warmer, Judy and I need to break out some of his old guns and burn up some ammo in them. Judy loves to shoot his M1 Carbines with teh 30 round banana magazines. I wish I still had my old Ruger single action that was in .30 carbine, it would go nice with the M1's. But, you sure needed earmuffs when shooting that load sucker.

I still have a couple Lee Loaders from the '60's, one in 30-06, one in 6.5X54 that was for my old full stoked Mannlicher and a few years ago I found a first year of production Lee Loader in 12 ga. that was MIB for my old shotgun loading collection. Judy says that when we get moved into out new house we will have to get a couple old 6" glass show cases to display all our old gun stuff............but I think it would take like 4 of them! Heck, I even have a MOB chemistry set with microscope and accessories just like the one I had when I was 7 years old..........found it MIB on eBay a couple years ago and could not resist it, haha. Bekins is going to love us when we have to move!

No problem with a proper throat reamer.A gunsmith specializing in rifles probably has one otherwise the would need to order one and your cost would be higher.I have a 3" S&W 625 in 45ACP that I shot in competion (IDPA) with Moon clips. It was great on the speed reloads and it would chamber individual rounds as well, but since they are rimless the extractor wont work and you needed to push most of them out with a dowel.S$W did make a 9mm some years ago that had a unique designed extractor with small spring loaded extractors that came out of the star to extract the cases.I guess it was either prone to fair or too costly to make because they didn't offer it when they brought out the 40S&W revolver.I have a Tarus Raging Bull in 45 Colt.I found that they offered the same gun that they chambered the 454 Casul 5 shot in a six shot 45 Colt for about $200 less,so I have a six inch Blue.I have loaded to 1400fps w/255gr LBT
bullets, which is all the power I need. The gun handles the recoil amazingly well, atributed to the muzzle break and grip.

I had the 358 Hawk made on an old Ruger 77 30-06 that I got cheap. Fred Zeglin of Z-Hat re-bored the stock barrel to 35 cal and did the improvement to the chamber..had him Cryo the barrel and action and square the bolt to the bore. I had him fit his muzzle break on it too. This thing shoots case forming loads into 1 hole at 100 yards (250gr hornady at about 2500fps) and will shoot a box of shells into an 1 1/2" group as fast as I can shoot them. I think the cryo is the ticket as there is no stringing as the barrel gets hot enough to fry a turkey. He wrote me soon after I got it back and told me he short throated it and another guys at the same time and to send it back..that was 1998 and I didn't want to screw around so I shot bullets that fit although I couldn't get the same velocities advertised because I had to stop well short of mazimum because of pressure signs on the case and primer. I'd love to shoot the longer bullets out of it and get a couple hundred more fps out of it though. I wonder if I could mail you the action with a dummy round to take to your buddy? It would probably take him 5 minutes to do. I have been looking on line at the different companies that make throat reamers and it would cost about 70 bucks for one..but I don't know how hard it would be NOT to ruin this rifle.

I always wanted an old 1917 that a friend had..it was all tricked out for target shooting with sights and a super slick action. I also wanted a S&W 25 and a Python and a Colt ACE and a Korth 357..and...and...and...and.....

I'm glad I'm not a gun nut like you two!

Just have your gun guru free-throat you barre4l and you'll be able to shoot the longest .35 cal bullets in it.

Yesterday my new issue of American Rifleman came in the mail and there was an article about Ruger's new cartridge, the "Ruger .375" which caught my eye. They have come up with a .375 mag that is the length of an '06, fatter in diameter and out-perfomes the old 1912 .375 H&H!

And you know what that means............I gotta have one! Don't know what for, but there must be a need somewhere? Maybe for those rogue Montana prairie dogs? :^)

I figgered you'd be first in line for the 338 Federal. I read an article about 10 years ago about a guy that made up a 338-08 on a Winchester 88 lever action and was thinking about having my little full stock Ruger in 308 re bored and chambered for it..since the barrel is too thin for 358 win. Now that there is the 338 Federal I'm thinking about that..like I need another rifle I won't hunt with! I don't have a gun guru around here..they all went out of business when Wally World came to town. Just read a bunch about the 375 Ruger..big medicine. Those dogs won't even be able to hide in their burrows..just "excavate" them with a round or two. Your dies and empties are in the mail.

Since I have the .338/06 and really like it, a .338 Federal is not as interesting at this point. The .375 Ruger was on Guns & Ammo TV last night and it shot fine.

They also shot Rugers new remake of their Single Shot Tropical Rifle in it's ne wchambering of the old favorite African Dbl. Rifles in .400/450 and man did that barrel come up whne Col. Craig touched it off! I watched his girlfriend shoot a Cape Buff with that gun a couple of weeks ago and she handled it fine, even putting a second round of .400/450 into the buffs chest after it was down for the count, but not out. A lot of gun for a man or woman to shoot. Too me, a Tropical Rifle is a tad too light for the .400/450. I shot one a few times in .375 H&H and it was not very comfortable.

My old Model 70 in .375 H&H was comfortable to shoot after I had it fitted to my LOP. I shot two deer with it and the majority of the time, for practice, I shot jackrabbits with it in the foothills west of Barkersfield, Ca. where an uncle lived. I still have a few rounds of .375 H&H that I loaded woth Hornyday's 300 grain solids. I once shot one through a 24" pine tree. The bullet passd through the tree, hit the hill 50 yards behind it and tore up the ground like a grenade going off! That was the last time I shot solids through it.

BTW you have a years subscription to Shooting Sportsman Magazine coming your way, they said it will take about 8 weeks for the first copy to arrive.

Thanks again,

Dave

Thanks Dave. Let me know when the Post Office delivers the goods. If you want an interesting caliber, look at Z-Hats 411 Hawk..he can take and old 30-06 and whip one up for you. I'll be aggressively watching for the magazine.
