Clipper Clay Crushers first youth shooting practice

Well we had our first team practice on the sporting clays course at Addieville. Great time and all the kids were very safe and had fun. I have one of the club managers talk to the kids at out team meeting before going out shooting. John Butler did great for his first time shooting flying targets and the other three did well on the course too. I know one of the other posters here has a child in a similar program and it is great. Take a look at the National Shooting Sports Foundation web site and they have a Scholastic Clay Target Program. We have started a team and we will be shooting Trap and Sporting Clays. These guys are the Rookie Class but we have some other kids that are in the 14 year old bracket that are going to shoot on our team too just a different squad. Take a look http://www.nssf.org/sctp

John and I had the best time. I did not believe it when I looked into the box and saw that I was near to the end of the reloads I had made up for the gun John was shooting. We have his first target in the empty box of shells and it has the date and place marked on it. Very neat.
Can not say enough about how proud I am of all the boys and their safety first mindset. They all are sportsmen first. Having such a nice place to shoot at, that encourages kids who are starting out was great.
Lee if you read this I think the 130 dollar shotgun is a working solution for getting started. I did have Mary test it with the 3\4 oz reloads vs. 7\8 oz 1100fps factory stuff and she noticed the difference. I was also happy with the ease that the bore could be checked and the action deemed safe by being open.
I will say however that I now have a new lust for a 20 ga auto after watching two boys smack a tower bird that was out there. Nice job Rob and Hank jr. I also have a very high reguard for young eyes and a 410. Greg was all over his birds with his dads old single shot.
Best darn burger I have eaten in a long time.
Thank you again.

Hi Bob,

What is your son shooting? I am looking to get something for my son Josh to shoot for the team as well. He is a bit on the light side in terms of his weight and would need to shoot something with very light recoil.

Thanks,
Nate Grace

More info for you Eric. The forum on the SCTP site just openned last week and there is some good info on there and a good area to ask about youth guns too.

We had a great time on Sat with the boys and I'm really pumped about what we are going to be able to do in the future. You should think about starting a Rookie Team Eric. It is not that hard and you can shoot any of the shooting sports. HHG

Nate,
it is a New England Arms 20 ga single shot that I bought used for $89. The stock was cut down and the comb was cut and replaced with a flat parallel section similar to a trap stock sold by Wenig. A 1" recoil pad was added and a foam pad was put on the comb. I only let John shoot light 3\4 oz reloads in it as it still has some kick with 7\8 light loads.
If you don't want to reload light 3\4 20 loads can be bought or a "Little Skeeter" chamber insert could be used in .410 or 28 to keep the thing from kicking to hard.
Would be happy to help in any way if you have other questions.
Greg was shooting a nice old Stevens 410 single shot that was even lighter in weight and had very light recoil.
Check out auctionarms.com or gunbroker.com to get pictures and an idea of market price.

Hank,

Good to see the future waterfowlers getting interested in shooting! You probably should start budgeting now for new trap guns and other "essentials"...lol.

Thanks DeWayne, these guys are having fun and learning to be true sportsmen. We are going to shoot trap tonight, getting ready for a state shoot in 10 days. Should be a blast. Forget the budget Little Hank is already eyeing Mom's shotguns and I know mine are not far behind. :) I know that shotguns and ammo are cheap in the long run and I don't mind new trap guns. This keeps the kids going in the right direction and good grades in school just what we want for all our kids. Good luck on your waterfowl weekend I wish it was closer and could go but I have bluefin tuna to chase instead. Thanks HHG
