Discussion topic - Boat registration numbers and stickers

I have been corresponding with Steve about having some custom letters/numbers made if I decide to register the Scooter. If I don't hang the motor off it, then the discussion is moot. However, there is some real advantage to being able to motor this out while someone else is setting the rig, or I could even hunt it alone perhaps.

Anyway, the discussion is the feasibility of placing the registration on a removable substrate? I know the state guidelines likely say something about permanently affixed, and specific locations etc. But for discussion, why? What does the state gain by these numbers being visible and fixed? So they can verify I paid my money? Don't move the registration to another boat? OK, when I have the motor on I will have the numbers on? Just hate to ugly up a pretty boat. Most of our duck boats have camo hiding them all the time anyway. At the launch, the man can see the paperwork and be satisfied.

For the Scooter, Brian and I were scheming, and I am thinking I would have my Mom sew/quilt the registration numbers on a canvas that I could snap onto the deck. The state sticker I would affix to a piece of plastic I could sew on too. Pick a classic font, and other than the ugly sticker might look more vintage?

Dave,
I'll try to remember to post pictures this evening of how I've handled the "permanently attached" issue on my rig. I suspect one reason for permanent attachment would be to prevent moving the same set of numbers and stamps (read revenue) to multiple boats. (one at a time of course)

Dave~

Another approach would be to affix the numbers to the boat then cover them with a piece of canvas - painted the same color as the hull - that snaps over them.

All the best,

On my last rig I just got a piece of lexan from home depot, sprayed it OD green and placed my numbers on that. I then tied the plates with string to my grassing rails. Between breaking trough ice, in and out of the boat, docking they eventually cracked and fell off. I ran probably quite some time with no numbers displayed, but I did carry the lexan plates inside the boat just in case. Now with my new rig, I just decided to get the numbers as far under the grass rails as possible, itll be covered in grass anyways but it lets me run in the summer time for fishing and crabbing without any issues.

It's common to have numbers attached to a board, then fixed on the rope of an inflatable. I've also seen numbers permanently attached to Zodiacs.

I have gotten my boat registration checked multiple times while fishing or boating for pleasure. I have NEVER had a warden check the registration on my boat while duck hunting, despite being checked multiple times.

I painted black numbers on my DDG sculling boat hull. They are on the bow, barely visible even with the hull bare, and completely covered by grass when I am underway. I dutifully put my annual sticker on next to them and likewise cover it up.

I'm not sure what the legalities are, but I figure this has me covered if and when I get checked.

While fishing and summer boating, I frequently see wardens checking boats with good binoculars or a spotting scope and singling out those whose annual stickers are absent or the wrong color for boarding. I have never seen this during duck season, and with all of our boats camo-ed up, they'd be boarding us all.

Here is what I have done with my numbers and state sticker.

I made two panels out of a sheet of aluminum. Then painted one side flat brown and the other side off white. The numbers are attached to the white face of course. The panels are "PERMANENTLY" attached with a cable. (it would require tools to remove so I consider that to satisfy the "permanent" requirement.)

The panels can be easily flipped to either the number face or the flat brown face. I also intend to add grassing to the flat brown side. When underway I have the numbers exposed and clearly visible. When actually hunting the panels are flipped and camouflaged.

Make a plate out of the same wood as the boat and paint it the same color as your boat. Attach stickers to the plate/board. Buy some short bolts that won't go all the way through the board and screw then into the board at the ends. Put some Dual Lock(stronger than Velcro) on the board and boat. Attach board to boat with Velcro. When the warden sees the board on the boat with bolts at the end he will think it is permanently attached when it is really held in place temporarily with hook and loop.

Remove plate/board when you don't want it on the boat

I painted the #s on the inside of my flap boards. Underway the numbers are exposed [permanent], while shooting they are inside. Was told by the local DEC it was good. Around Wantagh area guys told me local police didn't agree. Told to paint on hull and cover with grass. HUH?

Black paint the numbers on and put the sticker next to it on the outside front of the hull and just put camo material over it and are grass to hide it while hunting.

Just follow the regs and dont get a ticket trying to outsmart the man, it makes life so much more easyer.
