Gelcoat Question

I have been looking at a couple older model mako's and considering purchasing one to fix up for flounder fishing etc. around here and at the beach. My question is if im to re-do one of these boats i would love to put a new coat on the exterior and possibly interior to make the boat look new but i dont have any expierience with gelcoating. Can you simply sand down and rough up the existing hull and apply a new coat to the entire boat or is it a much more drawn out process and requires the removal of the exsiting coat?

How does gelcoat go on? Can you apply it with household rollers or do you need special equipment? Any advice is appreciated.

Applying new gel coat is easy. Sand down the old.No need to remove it all. In fact of you do you will have a mess on your hands.Spray the new on.
The bad part is that gel coat does not go on smooth. You will have to sand out all the orange peel, and buff it out for it to be shiny and smooth.

Gelcoat is much more time consuming and not for an amature. Stay with some type of urathane finish.

If using the urethanes, be careful if you are planning on leaving it in the water over extended periods of time. Some of the Urethanes are hygroscopic and will absorb water and blister. Check with the manufacturer prior to using. If not left in the water, no problem.
