This is the seen as I approched the dock this morning. We had quite a storm roll though last night. Seems we had 4" of rain in 4 hours and high winds.

Here come the nieghbors to the rescuse. I had NO idea what I was going to do toget this thing righted.

At this point I just decided to jump and put an end to it. NOT!!!! I managed to get a rope around the motor and and under the boat and tied off to a cleat in hopes it wouldn't go competely over.

I couldn't believe we managed to get the thing to roll over. I was sure glad it wasn't a fiberglass boat.

Few more pictures to come.

Too bad Ed.

Get her out and dry off the motor and pull the plugs. Get all the water out and give everything a good bath with wd 40 and get here running as soon as you can. Use the WD 40 for starting fluid if you need to after draining the carb, not Ether. Good luck.

Ed, Hope you got her running. Like I told you on the phone I used to fill them up with water all the time but got them runnig right away and no harm. Actually here in the winter some crazy people run snowmobiles over open water until they sink without hurting the engine, can't say the same for the riders tho. Probably alcohol related. Let us know how things turn out.

Tom,

Got her running! I could believe I didn't have something electrical fail on me but it appears all is well. I didn't spray anything on the electical connections as Bob B. has mentioned but she's on the trailer and back in the yard so I'll probably do that tomorrow when I get home from work.

Ed,

Sounds like you came out ok main engine wise. I've submerged a 9.9 with no lasting damage. Just have to get them running pronto to dry them completely out.

Do unclamp your trolling motor and tip it up so that the control head is below the motor. Leave it this way long enough to see if you get any water running out. I've had rain water get inside a transom mount motor by getting past the upper control head and running down the inside of the shaft. It then proceeds to rust up the motor and bearings. Why the upper end is not better sealed is beyond me but they aren't.

If you do have water inside your elec. motor, the only way to dry it out completely, is to disassemble the motor itself. Disassembly is not real difficult but needs to be done in the proper order. If you need I can walk you thru it.

Maybe you need to consider an automatic switch on your bilge pump?????? I don't have one on my boat but then again I don't store my boat on the water unattended.

Dave,

Thanks for the heads up about the trolling motor. That never even crossed my mind. It's off the boat as of 6:30 this morning standing upset down. Haven't seen any water yet. Keeping my fingers crossed. That is an expevsive one to replace!

Funny thing is the bilge has a limit swith. Never kicked on. Atwood is getting an email today. I don't normally keep the boat at the dock over night. To many vandals on the river. We had gone out to watch the fireworks from the boat. The Jeep and trailer were at the ramp. By the time we got to the ramp there were ten or twelve boats waiting to load up so I decided just one night wouldn't hurt anything. Boy was that a shock.

I'll try the trolling motor when I get home from work. Hopefully you won't be getting a call tear down instructions.

Man, you are one lucky person, living where there is fresh water---salt provides you with a whole different raft of problems--glad you got it running again!

Ed:
You had some busy 4th of July! Glad everything worked out and is running now. Sounds with some great help all is well now.

Heh heh heh..hahahahaha..glad it happened to someone else and not me. Good to see it's up and running..you may want to run a bit more oil in your mix for a bit to get the innards re-lubed..like 40:1 or 30:1....piece of mind if nothing else. Seems like they would build motors so they are waterproof doesn't it?

Thanks. I've seen what salt does too. The river does has some pluses.

Yeah it was fun. I'm lucky to have some good neighbors. Entertained the neighbors for hours....hehe. Had one old gal in a lawn chair and a video camera. These folks on the island don't get out to much!

Lee and Ryan, After the initial shock the best thing to do is find something to laugh about and then get to work. I know I'm one lucky SOB. Our first thought was to pull the spuds on the dock, unpin the dock from the walkway and try to pull it to shore. I'm not sure I'd found anything to laugh about if the boat would have gone over and took the dock with it...

I've always run the motor a little heavy on oil. As you know there's nothing worse than to run a 2 cylce lean. It's a good running motor for 21 years old. Kinda like to keep it that way.

Glad you got a chuckle...Glad I can laugh about it...
