Anyone have any comments on Idaho activities? I haven't started to do a lot of research until this week, so I'm early in the planning. I will be there Aug/Sept/Oct timeframe. Planning on some sight seeing, bird hunting, fishing, backpacking, some big game hunting.

Any thoughts on upland birds??? I'm just starting to look at distributions and population levels in different areas. General comments would be great...

Good thing you are not planning on cramming too much into a single trip. LOL.

Nah, trying on not being too ambitious.

Idaho looked cool as we flew over it. I'm in favor of cramming as much as possible into vacations.

I'd try to get into some upland birds if I were you Tod, seems like there is lots of opportunities out there.

The west is the place to be, I'm counting down until we get back there.

Craters of the Moon

rafting Owyhee river. NV and ID mini grand canyon far off any path, beaten or otherwise. There are chukar here.

Twin Falls has some water stuff

If you want to see some cool rocks, go to Leslie Gulch outside Jordan Valley, OR. If the water is up you can canoe the reservoir at the end of the road. If the water is down you can take a picture of the concrete boat launch hundreds of yards from the water's edge. Mule deer all over the place. Very dangerous highways in the pre dawn darkness.

Silver City, ID. Living ghost town up in the mountains.

I don't know much at all about the upland stuff in the south. I do know that there are quail all over the place in the farms between Napa and Boise.

All the lakes are stocked with something to catch.

Craters of the moon monument is worth a few hours if you are anywhere close.
I remember hiking to (and in to) a lava tube many years ago.

Craters of the Moon was on the list - Jen was eons ago and wanted to go back - thanks! Silver City looks like something to do if we get over to that part of the state. Same with Leslie Gulch - that looks pretty cool. Thanks Ray, you always have great suggestions!

Poked around in an old note book.

Borah and Leatherman Peaks are mentioned.

Looked into it and that is the Pahsimeroi Range. Several high lakes in passes on an established trail and two track system.

Thanks Ray, it took me a couple days to look that up! We are going to be in the general area and looking for a couple early high backpacking areas. I'll read up on the area. Looks pretty from the pictures!

Got the Forest service vehicle use maps for that area today!

Tons of stuff to do up there....world-class fly fishing in Eastern Idaho-Henry's Fork, the Madison, Yellowstone, and Snake are all within a days drive of each other. Lots of great chukar/hun hunting on the west end of the state, especially in the Oregon border area. Good pheasant hunting too, especially further south. Lots of good forest grouse hunting in the higher elevations, and some great backpacking and camping too-you won't have a hard time finding some great stuff to do! Also some great waterfowling opportunities if you're around in October.
