Is it deer season yet?

If I was not such a stickler for hard horned deer, I could probably do O.K. during our archery season which is open now. But I just can't see shooting s deer in velvet when his antlers are not even fully grown out. But to each his own.

I did a little "Camera Hunting" this morning. A couple of Blacktail 3x3's were hanging around so I put the sneal on them:

This guy saw me but did not run.

He soon went back to eating.

This photo would have been better if that dang tree had not been in the way.

Would this be considered "Shooting over Bait"? Now I know where all the bird seed has been going.

This is the same feeder that the black bear bent over a couple of months ago. It's wild living with the critters.

Tod, If you email me your phone number and let me know what is a good time for me to call you, I think I might be able to save you some time and gas. There is not much area along Hwy. 2 that we have not hunted these past couple of years.

From the looks of the lines you drew on that US map, it looks to me like you are going to be heading west on 94 to Glendive and then N/W to either Wolf Point or Glasgow on Hwy. 2. Then west thru Hinsdale, Saco, Malta, Dodson, Harlem, Chinook to Havre where you'll take Hwy 87 S/W to Fort Benton and Great Falls on your way to Idaho and Washington.

In the past two years we have hunted all those places and have found some nice honey holes, so to speak. I'd be happy to give you some ideas for hunting some of those areas.

We now have those upland birds pretty well dialed in after spending a lot of time & money in the past. Are you planning to hunt Prairie Chicken on the way through the Dakota's? I know I could not drive thru them if the season was open and NOT try and shoot them.

Your plans for this trip is about the best I have ever seen for a grand slam of US upland birds, what an adventure. First it was HuntingDave's trip to Alaska and now we get to see the ultimate upland bird hunt by another DHBP member...........it is really going to be a fantasic trip of a lifetime!

Best,

Dave

Like all game, they tend to taste good whenever they are on good feed. The old timers around here always told me they coveted a June buck for eating above any other time of year. I find that my Muzzleloader season the first week of November makes for some good eating venison partly due to having fed on acorns (here on the place) just about the whole month of October.

Our white oaks are already getting loaded down with acorns. We've seemed to have had bumper crops of acorns here the past 3 years. The bears love eating them too along with all the blackberries on the place.

I got a kick out of the pheasants in the flight pen this morning. The roosters are really starting to get their colors now, red around the eues and green down their necks, but now the males are starting to fly teh whole length (120 feet) of the pen and when they do they are making that great cock pheasant call they make when they flush. It's great to hear that sounhere in the Valley again.

My backhoe operator heard them this morning and said he's sure missed hearing them. He wants 10 pairs to release on his riverfront farm this fall, just so he can see them once in awhile. Besides, I have to take care of him..........he owns the best trout & steelehead hole on the river and let sme fish it anytime I want. The last two steelehead I caught out of his hole were 7 and 11 pounds.

That 3 x 3 should grow up to be a nice buck in a few years,if he lasts that long.Nice pics.Must be a treat to see the birds grow.

Our bow season for deer in Wisconsin starts the 13th of September. I'm surprised you have such an early season with the velvet still on the horns.

LOL, that one of those 3x3's was back here late this afternoon when I was on teh phone with Joe O. and that buck was sure enjoying the clover and Judy's roses. There has been a lot of bucks hanging around here this summer. I see their tracks where they walk along the pheasant flight pen on just about a nightly visit with all those birds. It also seems that the local turkeys like visiting the pheasants every morning, their tracks and molted feathers are all around the pen each day. Judy has been picking up all the turkey feathers she finds and the other day I told her that she should have just about enough to make a whole turkey!
