Keep her foot dry for 5 days!

Good grief, it is the middle of duck season and I can't use Habi. I had brought her back from seeing the vet and they had her all bandaged up. By the way, she doesn't mind being in the house at all. In fact, she seems to love all the attention and just staying nice and warm.

This is what a mesquite thorn looks like. (a female Wilson's warbler behind the thorns) They are formidable if you have ever been punctured by one or worse yet had one break off in you. Anyway, Habi happened to step on one when I was taking Preston out to the ranch. It was amazing how quickly her foot began to swell. I had to pick her up and put her back in the truck.

Al,

When I read the title, I figured it had something to do with a thorn,,, ouch! I'm sure she is indeed enjoying the R%R, just don't make too many trips without her. :>) Hope the recovery is swift and complete.

Sorry to hear Habi is on the DL - Hopefully she recovers in time to snatch a couple more retrievers for you before season ends..

Al ,sorry to hear about habi.I know how you feel.I went thru a similar instance with my yellow lab buster when he stepped on aboard with a rusty nail protuding out of aboard with his front paw while duck hunting the del river,it swelled up the size of a lemon ,after several weeks and a vet bill close to a $1000.oo .At first I thought he would loose the leg.But with the vet.and medication and care he came thru with flying colors.NOTE; the best thing to draw out any infection {per vet recomedation} was warm water mixed with iodine soaking the injury for 5 minutes, we used 1/2 Plastic 2 liter bottle. Then clean bandages and tape.Use clean bandages and rewrap if they come off.Treatment twice a day A:M & PM :PS :the vet charges $25.oo to change the bandages which I decided to do my self. Buster passed on 2 yrs ago and I still miss him.Could live with with a yellow lab so now I have "RANGER" who I trained myself.he has a terrific nose for scenting lost ducks in heavy marsh grass. He is really a pistol and hand full, but I love him to and so does my wife who spoils him like a baby. Wishing the best for u and habi HAPPY NEW YEAR Cas

HI Al
Sorry about Habis foot, that looks like a nasty thorn. Im sure she wont milk it for any extra attention. LOL

How is Habi coming along? Give her a biscuit and a "good girl" scratch behind the ears from me!

Dave, I didn't hunt at all the rest of this week just because of a bad head cold. Today her bandage comes off and most likely on Monday I'll have her by my side.

Thank you Dave. I hope your holidays were blessed. Stay safe and warm with that latest storm that whipped through your area.

Thanks a lot, Vic. I'm hoping that we can find a few ducks in the next three weeks that we have left to hunt. Should be fun especially if the reverse migration starts. Always that possibility of seeing a cinnamon teal!

I'm sure glad that Buster healed well after that episode, Cas. Sorry to hear of what it cost, however. Thanks for writing down what the vet told you. That is exactly what we will do next time.
Here's hoping that 2014 is a good one for you.

You were so right, Doug. Seems that our four legged critters are much like us when they need attention! By the way, it is one VERY nasty thorn.

All the swelling is now abated and she seems to handle everything in stride. The bandage comes off today. I figured with the NFL games this weekend, two extra days of rest will be just fine. We will go hunting on Monday.
Carl, she will definitely get the biscuit and scratch behind the ears.

Al, Sorry to hear about Habi's misfortune, between snakes and thorns I don't see how dogs ever get through the places they go. Oh yes and then there are alligators, ice, bluegreen alge, skunks, cars, stupid hunting companions that shoot your dog. Isn't it funny how round their heads get when something is wrong and how flat top they can be when something is about to happen. Really happy to hear she is recovering and will be back in action soon.

Thanks for the well wishes, Tom. I like the way you caught that "rounded" look verses the "flat-top" look depending on how the dog feels. Right on! Stay warm.
