Making a knife sheath???

Sutton sent me some thick assed leather and I'd like to make a sheath for the beautifull knife that Jeff made for the Huff auction. Anybody know how to start? Does the leather have to be treated with anything so the damascus doesn't get eaten by it? I have a half an idea how to do it but don't want to waste leather or hurt the blade. Thanks in advance.

Lee,
Obviously, post a pic when you get it done.
Just don't store the blade in the sheath when your not useing it, Leather has a tendacy to attract moisture from the air, Thus a better / higher chance of damage to the blade. A LIGHT, rub of oil always helps.

Oh, and could you please try to keep a tally of whatever you cut / clean with it ? I just like to know how far a blade goes before you touch the original edge.

I think Rick Pierce said he managed something like 3 deer , some ducks , and was partially finishedwith a pig before he re-touched the edge!

GOOD LUCK................and keep us posted

I haven't even cut myself with it yet..which is a miracle in itself. I want to make a sheath so it's not cutting it's way out of my blind bag or pocket...and I'm not fond of "bobbing for razorblades". I'll get started on it. Where can I get some small silver rivet things?

by looking at something more modern for your sheath....something like the kydex sheaths that Russell has on some of their knives...I haven't seen your blade but they might have something that would work on your design....

The up side to that would be that since it would be inert you wouldn't have to worry about storing the blade in the sheath. I've seen some sweet damacus blades ruined by rust and/or discoloration when kept in a leather sheath even for a short period of time....

Lee,

I have no clue how to do them myself but I took a nice buck knife to an old fashioned shoe shop where they do the repairing of old leather shoes and make those old lady shoes with the big risers. Anyhow, 5 minute discussion with the guy and he had the new sheath done in 1 week for like 15 bucks. Well worth my time and effort and complete lack of any of the necessary tools. Just a thought.

Post up what you get finished. The knife too...

Lee what I did for one knife is sanwich the knife blade between two pieces of wood. and covered with leather. I got that idea from how the Finnish did it with there fishing Knives. Two separate pieces of wood, routed out the shape of the knife blade and then glued together. Shape the out side and cover with leather. Damp the leather and sretch and sew. If you screw up which I don't think you will, I got all kinds of leather. Pete

Interesting on the Kydex kit. This knife screams "Fine Corinthian Leather"....I was thinking since a fine double came wrapped in that leather that maybe....it was treated to guard against rust.

Eric, our shoe repair guy went out of business when Wally world came to town. He was great too which really pisses me off!

Pete, I have one of those old "hammer through a nickle" Swiss laminated steel Mora?? knives..I'll have to look at the sheath and see if it has wood in it..seems I had a Rapala filet knife that had a sheath like that.

Jeff, I'll keep ya posted.

Any more ideas?..anyone?? Thanks fellers.

Its pretty easy. fold it in half over the knife and hot glue it together. Trim off the extra (using said knife) and cut a hole for your belt. I should get paid for this

dont matter. I like the all temp. Did you get on the Jury? Chances are I'm sure he's guilty. Get'm hung and free up some evenings. Wife's going to China monday for 2 weeks. Looks like I'll have a few free evenings for whittlin.

Nope...walked in and loudly said "We hangin a Mexican?" And they said go home...not really but I'd like to. Had to call in last night and the message said no circuit court. Two weeks?? both your hands are gonna be cramped.
