Hey guys I just found this site while I was putting off doing my homework. My brother and I recently refurbished some old boats one fiberglass and two aluminum. I don't have the wood working tools that I see some of you have but I am interested in maiking my own boat. Have any of you guys ever done any metal working.

P.S. Here are some pictures from one of the aluminum boats we did.

Metal working is my business as I own and operate a small fabrication and repair company. If you plan on building your own aluminum boat you should be an acomplished welder/fabricator. TIG would be my choice of process however MIG would also work. The cost would be quite high unless you have access to a fab shop with a brake, punch, lathe etc. Although it sounds like a fun project for a fabricator, (one that I have considered) the time and money spent for the end product; an aluminum boat, just does'nt seem worth it. "Besides, real duck hunters use wooden/fiberglass boats."

Yeah I'm not planning on building an aluminum boat from total scratch just yet, and I have access through work to almost any tool imaginable. And I know that metal is not as romantic but on the river you need something that can take a beating. Last season I had to pull three hunters out from the middle of the channel and they had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital for hypothermia.

Howdy Pardner,

Silly me, I thought ethics, hunting skills, safety, marksmanship and knowledge of the sport makes a real duck hunter and not the material his/her boat is made from. Am I missing something here ?

Best,
Harry

New Guy: Were the 3 guys that you pulled out of the Mississippi off the point in Potosi?

Yeah The three guys were off the point in Potosi. That was a crazy morning. My partner and I didn't go out until sunrise because we knew it was rough out there and the ice was flowing down the river in sheets. When we got to the landing I heard someone yelling help and a minute later the Potosi fire department showed up with no boat! So my friend and I had to go out and rescue those guys.

I believe the DNR puller the boat out to make sure no one hit it but they lost everything else. Even the clothes they were wearing which were cut off in order to heat them up faster. The guy who owned the boat said all he could do is watch as his stuff, including a super black eagle, floated away. There was ice 100 yards out from shore already which is impressive overnight on the Mississippi. I think those guys were just happy to be alive.
