Older 25hp outboard w/ compression tank?

I have been looking for an outboard to push my 14ft fiberglass boat around at a good pace. I found an older guy who fixes outboards in his spare time for fun. He has a 25hp older possibly evinrude? w/ electric start & a gas tank. My boat is set up with a steering wheel and this motor is set up for that, he also said he would throw in a the steering w/it. He says its ugly, but I told him it was for a duck boat so ugly works for me. From what i have seen the deal is great compared to other motors I have looked into. He also said that the motor can only use a compression tank which is included. What exactly is a compression tank and how does it work? He said that they work great for some time but just stopped being used. Is this something that could be a problem in the wonderfull weather of waterfowling?? I just want a good motor that will start and keep going. The price can't be beat so I was looking for some input. Thanks in advance!

I had an older (1948?) 35 hp seahorse with a compression tank that I used duck hunting for at least a few years in all types of weather even breaking ice with the boat.

I ran fine. You need to open and vent the gas cap when ever you stop the motor. The engine pumps air in to the tank with pressurizes it and forces the fuel out the carb. I forgot to release the pressure once and developed a fuel line leak. All the fuel drained out while I was hunting from the pressure in the tank. I found out that a fully loaded, 16 foot aluminum, planing hull does not row very well at all, especially into a 20 mph head wind. I didn't forget to let the pressure out of the tank after that. I sold the motor will it still ran and is probably still pushing a boat around.

The motor you are looking would probably be fine. I would be sure to have extra fuel in a different tank and a backup motor also. Definitely oars for extra insurance since the motor is so old.

Brandon, Go ahead and buy the motor. There is a way to put a fuel pump on those old motors and use a new style tank. I will try to find the article on it and post a link for you. If I can't find it I will write up a description of the job and answer any ? about it also. Good luck.

Brad, That's it, thanks. It works and no thunder to be stolen here. I got home from the Lacrosse get together and folded up. Just woke up in time to get to bed. Good night. P.S. The job in the article works, I have done it.
