older outboards running on tcw3

I have a 9.9 yamaha 2 stroke. runs a mix of 100-1 with tcw3

I have a bunch of synthetic 2 stoke oil at the house, that I use in my chainsaws and garden equipment.

stihl recommends it, and they all seem to run smoother with synthetic

is there any reason an older 2 stoke yam would not be OK with synthetic oil in it?

Obviously I'm no expert here, but all of the Outboard mechanics I've ever talked to, say make sure it states- TCW on the oil. That stands for Two Cycle Water cooled. The 1,2,3 after stands for the latest rating.

Jon is correct with the TCW standing for two cycle water cooled and the higher number for latest version. That said I am personally (IMHO) biased against synthetic oil. Long story with a lot of history, not important here. There may be some engineer type here that can make a case for the stuff and I will listen but when you step back and look at the cost of oil vs a lack of lube failure I know what I will do. Good luck and I am waiting to hear others too.

Tom, my understanding is the detergents and lubrication properties in the oil. I used to run cheap wal mart brand tcw for a few years. Had some carb issues and lack of power. Switched to klotz with techniplate she cleaned right up. Figure spend the money on oil it's cheaper than a new motor. Is this on your estuary?

I would not use anything but outboard oil for the reasons stated, plus with a 9.9 you can't be burning much. The problem with the wrong or cheap oil is if you use it often. If you just used for a tank it is no big deal. If you use it all the time is when you could possibly get into trouble. Use what you have in a pinch, but use the right stuff the rest of the time.

thanks for the replies
I contacted a friend who is a yamaha and etec dealer

the full synthetic outboard oil that I have in quantity is a TCW
rated oil and the dealer thought it would be a great oil for the older 9.9
so I will give it a try this weekend and see how it goes.

it is not by any means cheap stuff. just left over oil I have from running a pair of 150 etecs on the stuff.

and yes it is on the estuary, really fun boat that I have been getting a lot of use out of this year.
