Alright so for those of you that have picked up a used outboard how did you prep it for paint?

Im going to paint the mercury up for use this year with some FME and will be brushing it on. I was wonderin how you all prep a motor and what you did with the decals on it?

Thanks everyone. Heading out to the garage to wrap up a few details on the boat today.

Hi Brandon,
Take a heat gun and remove the decals. You can also merely use a razor blade to remove the decals also. Whatever works easiest. Once removed, clean with lacquer thinner to remove any adhesive residue.
Wipe the whole motor down with the lacquer thinner to remove any traces of grease, oil & gas.
Sand the motor, blow it off, tack rag it and paint it.
If need ......... power wash first....gets a lot of the junk off and makes the rest of the work easier.

Just be careful with the local laws. I live on a 9.9 only body of water, I removed all the decals when I painted my motor. Was'nt long that I was stopped at the boat ramp many times having to prove the motor was a 9.9 ended up purchasing 9.9 decals, placed them on the back section of the cowl and no more problems. Covers well with small piece of camo.

Brandon as long as you don't it, as I did it. You should be alright. I had a plastic cover on my motor and just spray painted it. The paint didn't adhere. If I was to do over I would use Fusion paint. Sticks well to plastic. Then you could use any paint on top of that. Of course as mentioned clean well before.

If its not too late, I'll add a bit. I have a early 90's Merc 25hp. Removed the cowling and scraped the decals off, sanded the entire outside of the cowling (removed little scratches and such). Once satisfied I painted with Parkers Duck Boat paint. I also taped off the mounting portion of the lower shaft, and the bottom gear housing then cleaned up and dirt and grime on the remaining mid section and wiped it with paint thinnner to remove any "extras" then shot a coat of parkers right over the factory paint.

That was 2 years ago and nothing peels or has chipped. Topp of my motor Green, little black under that, Green shaft, black bottom. Enough shine gone to be happy, still pretty clean looking motor. We have no restrictions, so I never worried about putting the decals back. I was going to paint 25 on the back, but never bothered.
