Have any of you made a North American Shoveler decoy? I haven't seen one and thought it would be a cool decoy. Also, I have never made a decoy and would like to. Is there a book that you might recomend or point my where to start? Thanks

Here is a pair of gunners I made ~ 25 years ago. Hollow pine.

Welcome to the world of decoy carving! I can dig out my patterns if you are interested.

All the best,

SJS

There are a lot of books out there. Check out eBay, I see a lot on there.

Steve they are awesome looking decoys! I love the simplicity of the pair.

Here are 2 books that will help you out.

There sure are many "how to" books out there, about Decoys. DUCK DECOYS How To Make Them-How To Paint Them-How To Rig Them, by Eugene V. Connett, and Making Decoys The Century-Old Way, by Grayson Chesser & Curtis Badger. One old classic, and one new classic.

Reference books, The Ducks, Geese And Swans Of North America by Francis H. Kortright, and Ducks, Geese & Swans of North America by Frank C. Bellrose.

Painting - Waterfowl Painting Blue Ribbon Techniques by William Veasey, and a good book for bill shape, size, and color, The LeMaster Method, by Richard LeMaster.

Those are just a few that I have collected over the years. Learn from each, and then work on your own Style, and what Pleases you. Enjoy yourself and Have FUN! The second pair of decoys I carved
years ago, were Spoonbills..... Still got em. Every time I look at em and hold em, they bring back lots of memories.

get on Amazon and buy used copies of everything, sooner or later you will own them all. A nice carving library is nice to have for reference, it is also nice to lend out to those you know who want to learn. You will pull a little information out of each book and combine info to come up with your own needs.

here is a spooner I did this fall, I try to do at least one per year. Simple gunner

Yea...simple. You make it look too easy Tom

Thanks for the great pictures! And for the references. I'm going to pick a couple up and do some research before I start. I always thought it would be cool to carve one for the old man and have a few to hand down to the kids when we are older! Ill try to keep posted!!
