I am in the process of replacing the trasnsom on my 14ft fiberglass boat. I have made the new transom (glued together w/5200) and all I have to do to finish is use the old transom as a template and cut. I have removed the back layer of fiberglass, it was thin and in bad shape. The bottom and sides are thick and sturdy. The front layer is also thin and wavey. There is a shelf 3/4 of the way up that is very sturdy. I was hoping to just remove the weak skin and glass in the new transom. I read elsewhere that the wood should be 1/4in away from the hull and sides so it does not create a stress point. This does not make sense to me. I hope that I can get some pointers and direction so it does not fall off. Thank You in advance.
