I went to a lake over near farmville saturday for late geese. I hunted there the saturday befor duck season went out and noticed a pattern the geese were using. No flocks but several singles and doubles. There is an area where a finger of the lake narrows down just as it transitions into and area with some old standing timber. The finger narrows right there and they crossed into it at the same place. They would come up a finger of the manmade lake in one of two directions but would cross the same corner. I set up Saturday with a small spread feeling that if I'm just dealing with singles and doubles then I'm not going to need many decoys. I used 5 geese ( I went back to my carry lites this year) and 7 black ducks. About 7am a pa[r came out and I turned them and they gave a flyby way too high to shoot. I shot time later a lone single came out and circled twice befor flying down the lake. I called as long as I could hear him calling. A minute or so after I stopped calling I could hear him comming back. He circled, getting lower each pass. When he set up Six could see him till he was 4 or 5 yards off the water. I folded him up with a single shot of Winchester Supreme Elite #4's at about 25 yards. I sent Six out for him and she kept an eye on the decoys but stayed streight untill she saw ripples from the goose that was still slowly moving. She looked at him foe a second tryinfg to figure out how to pick him up. She finally grabbed him by the base of the neck at the beginning of the breast and brought him straight back in. We had anothe flight of 4 birds come over, then they stopped flying. I think I would have had better luck if they had been comming in instead of leaving. Had plenty of time to scout the lake and come up with some ideas for next Friday, the last day. Nice sized goose too, a tick over ten pounds. I'm really happy witht he way she has finished out the season. On a side note, I couldn't keep the woodducks out of the decoys and here it is February.
