nice head, nice body, good bill color!!!!!---too much overstatement for a gunning bird, though--imo---the big factor i have noticed over the years with blacks is the silver grey on the tertial feathers---all that feathering disappears at a distance, but the head and tertials still manage to show pretty clearly! Gotta somehow get you outta that deco mode, Jeff!
HOWZIT FLOAT????

i knew i'd get the "too much froo froo" comment.. honestly.. i would just leave the orange/b.s. outline but it's so crappy that i go back and cover up some of it with the darker body color.. other than that.. there isn't much froo froo on the body. the head could have just been ticks for sure. i'll go back and lighten the tertials i usually do, just forgot on this one in a rush to show it off

as for floating.. it won't be floated for a while. no need.. hunting season is 10 months away!
thanks for the comments george

Hey, no time like the present to field test, or at least washtub test the stuff!! Had this discussion a while back with chris pratt concerning a greenwing he did---when he got it about twenty yards away from his hand, he understood my philosophy about sealing with reducing to the least amount of work to produce the greatest impact in gunning conditions---the best example of why to put more information on a body is the delaware river style---the hunters did that because they were inclined to believe that the detailing would hold the ducks longer in their spread while they sculled down on them---Them cuties were never really designed to be used in fromt of a blind!
As far as the head, , the ticking is the one thing that seems to be part of the blackduck's personna---i hate doing it, but it DOES make the head a lot nicer looking!!

Season's over? Nah...one more weekend...

I'll be on the river Saturday with Laura and Dr. Hathcock if you want to stop by the rig and sit for a while to see if any bluebills come by.

The weekend of the big rain, Ronnie Ladd, Dr. Hathcock and I put the hurt to 'em. Don't know if they've gone downriver with the floodwater or not, but we had greaters and lessers, goldeneyes, saw some cans and buffies, and had a pair of geese cruise through as we were picking up decoys with no guns loaded...

Like the black duck. The thing that's hard for me is to keep the feathers from looking like scales when I paint them in. Looks like a little Wheeler in the pattern, maybe?, but I like it...puffy cheeks, contented bird, good job on the head painting...and I agree with Obi...paint the tertials...

If you show up on the river, bring the black duck; I'd like to see it in hand...

Rick,

the divers were in force at ed gordon that weekend too. They've left since then. Hopefully you'll see more than i did. I bet i've seen 20 ducks in the last 1.5 weeks. call me a sissy, but that's not enough for me to fool with. too much other stuff i need to do instead of sleeping all day after a 330 am wakeup.

Jeff, you can sure enough carve but you need someone to teach you how to duck hunt. Living in Arkansas and not killing birds... whew! Maybe you can make a trip over to MS next year. I can at least put you on some shovelers or something. :)

sounds like a plan! i've only been hunting 7 years tops. i need to see how others do it.... to see if i just suck, or if i just don't have enough birds to work with.
