Teal

Does anyone have any suggestions on places they have hunted and been able to harvest trophy specimens of all 3 teal? Have to take a year off on trips this year with the addition of my son in September, but would like to start getting some suggestions on guides/lodges for the future. Widgeon and shovelers would be a great bonus too.

If your looking to go outside the country http://www.mazatlanwingshootingclub.com/ plenty of all 3 teal and bootlips.....
Not sure about where in the States you could go but Im sure you can find an outfit in Texas

If I wanted ALL THREE, in prime breeding plumage, in one trip I'd be looking at the Southern and the Central Valley of California the last two weeks of the season.....and I'd be looking at a Guide to be sure I wasn't hunting heavily gunned public marshes where I might not be able to get a permit.....
Texas has Cinammons but for the most part the Cinnamons arrive after the season.....I gunned Texas for MANY YEARS and never saw one only to hear...."boy if es could just shoot em now" two weeks later....
Great Salt Lake for A WORLD of Shovelors..and people that don't despise them as "trash".....
South Florida for prime Bluewings AND Fulvous and Black Bellied Whistling Ducks.....
Let me know if you need Guide recommendations for those places...all a little tough to free lance on a single trip due to equipment or access.....

John...WHERE in Texas for Cinnamons?...I like Texas way better than California and its been years since I've shot them as anything but incidentals...

There is a 750 acres lease in Lissie Tx. It cost roughly 500 a season. You can shoot all species listed most of the season. You might know this guy that can put you in the right spots throughout the season. You might have hunted with him many of times. I hear he is a great shot with the 20 gauge. His name is Kristan Sacharnoski. I hear he also has plenty of gear to hunt snow geese, specs and sandhill cranes throughout the season. By the way I believe he shot six species of ducks opening morning last year as well as 7 other times through the season just to see if he could do it. I know he can not take you as a guest because it is one gun per leasee. But if you join the club you are welcome anytime. Heck your wife might even love the warmer weather during December and January.

Kristan....seriously....how often do you shoot Cinnamons on the lease?.....I know things have changed greatly over the years but Lizzie was the center of operations for many, (as in over a dozen), years back in the past Century......we never even saw a Cinnamon there in all the years and all the trips we hunted there....heck even in the Spring Snow Goose Season they were only occasionally seen.....
Have things changed "recently" so that they are wintering there now?..in numbers...cause I've got lease money in my hand...and decoys as thanks to "that guy"......
Whistling Ducks...are they occurring there now during the regular season as well?...

I see spotted numbers of cinnamon throughout the season. Though not in large numbers like the blues or greens. They do tend to migrate very early and we tend to see them in numbers the last part of season on the trip back. The last part of season several were killed off the lease. I shot several last year myself. One early season with drab plumage then two late season over a few decoys I painted brownish red and setup with some shovelers. I believe they are just as stubborn as whistlers wanting to land with their own. I am not going to lie to you about seeing thousands but I do frequently see them hunting on the acreage I hunt outside of lissie.

Do the hunts over a period of time, and in different places to get the birds you want. Makes it much more interesting and rewarding on every level.

If you want Cinnamons, you should head to the southern half of California. Plenty of cinnamons and greenwings here plus a boatload of shovelers. Call me if you're interested in coming.

Really?

I've moved and changed jobs since you were here last. Send me an email and come on down.

Are you in WA or FL now? If FL, where? I'll be there soon to harpoon a gator. Might let you buy me a beer!

Kristan....that's definitely different than the years I was hunting that same general area a century ago....neat to hear that they are "expected" even if they aren't as common as Bluewings....
I've never had the opportunity to hunt them where there were enough of them for them to be picky about species...carved my first decoy, Teal, way back in the mid-70's before I had even seen one....lived in Florida and not expected....still had to have a Cinnamon in that rig "just in case"...I still have that decoy and actually shot Cinnamons over it in three different States and Mexico. It will go with me the next time I go somewhere where they might be expected....
Whistling Ducks....you seeing them during the season?...

Steve

In Florida right now....I'll stay through our Teal Season, (9-28), and then back to Washington for the season there.....if things go as planned that will be the last one there as a Resident and we'll relocate back as soon as Debby is done in June-2015.....
Gator hunting the Labor Day weekend....when and where will you be?......and with who?......
Walking out the door to meet my sister...I'll shoot you an e-mail tonight....

Steve

Kevin...does the old e-mail still work?....the one I had was associated with your old job and you said you had changed jobs.....
Let me know or shoot me one...my old e-mail that you have still works...
