I guess we told Austin's friend and his dad one too many duck hunting stories so they had to try it out. He has never shot a shotgun before. I gave him some shotgun training in the garage last night ...no shells of course. So ... first hunt, first shot ever...2 bluewings settle in the deeks...he stands ... the birds lift ...he drops one. Next a lone hen mottled drops in the set ...he stands...the bird lifts ... he fires and misses. But wait! He remembers the lessons of the garage...shucks the spent round ...chambers the next shell fires and ...Yes! He scores his second bird. Two birds. Three shots. I think he is a natural. He is hooked for life. His father thanked me a few times but I told him this little deal will probably cost him $10,000 to $12,000 before next season with alll the junk he is going to have to buy!
Next a pair comes in ...Austin rises to shoot and drops his bird. I quickly remember to tell his friend not to shoot ...we are at the mottled limit. I called the drake back to land 3 times before he comes to the conclusion she is not getting back up.
