Whistler hen: Precopulatory

Hey, No spring duck hunting. They banned that when I was a kid, They do look good on the water.(; )

My friend hatched the idea of the "Ready" hen. We thought it would compliment the "Head-throw" drakes we carved.
The bird is hollowed basswood with a 4" deep, back weighted keel. It floated quite nicely.

My snow goose hunting ended yesterday, I think.

A single Ross was in the decoys when I got there yesterday, just minding his own business. Got all situated and he hung tight, actually came as close as 20 yards while swimming by me as I set a few fullbodies in front of the pit and situated the speakers.

I sat down for about 10 minutes and looked back out and he was back on the bank where I suspect he was when I arrived. Now I'd crank up the e-caller, it didn't move. 45 minutes passed when a group of 25 specks and a juvy blue and snow flew by me at break neck speed, by the time I got the e-caller turned on the birds where 250-300 yds by me in the 30 mph south wind.

When the sound hit em it was like they hit a wall and the whole flock fought its way back toward my position, I kept sneaking peeks at their agonizingly slow return. The juvy blue was gaining ground on my side my side of the flock and their postion wasn't going to allow me a shoot, I thought the snow was lagging a bit it would definitely be the shootable once the specks passed, if they didn't see me. At about 40 yard the whole flock shifted downwind and I shouldered my gun now watching the blue again.

My gun mount was good, I kept going over it in my head, the first of 3 specks passed just to my left as the blue appeared over my gun barrel, I pulled ahead only so slighty as the I squeezed the trigger on the bird.

I didn't even look for the lone snow as the bird crumpled.

As I got out the pit the Ross goose rose to its feet and once again entered the water, just minding his own business................
