Surf Brant

Wife, dog and I took a walk on the beach at sunrise this morning. Saw brant in the surf. I don't think I've ever seen that before. They were eating growth off the rocks. I've seen oldsquaw do that, but not brant. I like the sentry keeping watch on the rocks.

We see them do this in NJ sometimes. There is 1-2 spots here in NJ where you can almost hunt them on the sand from the beach.

I've done that here in CT. There are times when they really work the high energy surf areas.

The only place I see brant in Maine is a beach near where I grew up that looks just like this. They seem to cluster around freshwater seeps and small streams that support a lot of green algae.

We see the brant do the same in NW Washington State. Eating the sea lettuce and eel grass that is present.
