Did you train your dog today?

Now that season is officially over.. Dog training to correct all the issues we discovered during season begins. Been diligent this month with a new training partner and just helps start your day off right.

Today we were working on distance and doubles for the Chessie . The lab it’s just “fun time” for him.

No pics during training .. but here is the result after their breakfast. Today they had scrambled eggs added to their cheerios. Now it’s nap time while dad works

Yes!!!! My girl has been out of commission for the last couple of weeks due to a lacerated foot, but back at it yesterday. Some type of training is in order every day. They love it and it pays off in the long run. I always try to do 5-15 minutes of obedience training every day. In addition to the sit, down, heel, stay, here I also throw in leave it and stopping halfway on recall. All of this can be done in your yard or on your morning walk and pays off big time at the boat ramp when hunting. I would like a dollar for every time I am at the ramp and somebody is chasing their dog around (CRAZY). If you add in some retrieving drills 2-3 times a week and you should be good to go. We also do just playtime every day. All that and you get a happy dog and happy owner.IMG_6603[1718].jpglap dog.jpg

Worked on stretching out today. Doubles to start with . Initial launch from the left (55-60 ish yards) Go bird on the right (100 yards)

Short single at 20 yards.

Final retrieve # 2 was re-loaded for a long single to cap off the morning

Buddy got some new launchers we were trying . Started at 745, finished at 930 time we ran all the dogs .. Due to heat we should have started a little earlier but got off work late , and it would be pulling teeth to get my relief to come in early

Trained again this morning before work (Days this week) Buddy got up and drove down.
Still muggy as hell at 545 in the morning.
Did a short double followed by a blind (#3)

All 3 dogs marked well. My two need more blind work for sure

The dark area is actually a pretty deep depression they have to drop down in and work out of .. so good practice for keeping the line in hills

We train almost everyday and run field trials when we can. Yellow dog is 3, QAA and will be running all age stakes this fall. Black dog is 2, went 3-4 series in several derbies and will be running qualifying trials this fall.
Set ups over the last few days. I train alone or with my wife quite a bit, meet up with a group 2 times a week. I love retriever training.

Mark how did you get such clean diagrams on your pics ? Would appreciate knowing how to do this skill

Okay thats a cute pic but which of the dogs does the paddling!

See the dog with the leash attached? That is B....she has a listening problem with certain things AND she loves to pull. Debby just holds on and B takes her all over. When B needs to rest, Debby paddles. Considering how much energy the girl has, I think it is a fair exercise regimen for both.

Belle actually enjoys pulling me around but I do put a roading harness on her. I have not done so with the 12' board yet. I have considered a harness for Reggie so the two could pull me together but I have not done so yet.

Soooooo for the weekend, the dog with the rope is the one who paddles and pulls. The other two just get to paddle 🤪 and I just direct them where to go

I use microsoft powerpoint. Lots of drawing options and ability to add text. There area few apps for your phone that people I train with use, but I'm at a desk for work and find it easier to spend a few minutes of my lunch break keeping a training log in powerpoint.

Are you willing to share screen shots of this log for example

Where are you running trials at? I wonder if we have crossed paths.

I use OneNote for markups and maps and such.

I’ve been working on place training as well as daily marks on land and water with 13 week old Skaði, let’s see your dog sit on the wall like that!!
I swear it was right side up.

The screenshots I showed are straight from the log, I just got rid of some of my more in depth notes.

I am in Ontario Canada and have only run in Canada to date. I'm part of the executive of the Niagara Peninsula Retriever Training Club, and regularly train with the Long Point club, I'll be throwing birds at the 2024 National in North Bay this September.

Hoping to run some qualifying events in New York and Michigan soon, but dates this summer and fall don't mesh with my schedule.
