Storm Damage-Dodge and Krowl Scooter

My 1905 scooter was damaged when a tree out back uprooted and fell. It drove one of the tent frames through the deck. I slid a board between to prevent any water leaking into the hull, but it failed to keep the mice out! The grey layout suit was trashed. IMG_0043.jpegIMG_0044.jpegIMG_0045.jpeg

Fortunately, the deck damage occurred between stations, and no beams were damaged. I sanded down the paint and glass to expose the deck.

The more I use it, the more I love my Fein Multitool.

This hull is very lightly built on the decks. 1/2"x1/2" beams, and 1/4" cedar decks. I traced out the profiles, and cut some oak to sister to the beams. Because of the small scantlings I was afraid to try to mechanically attach them and elected to epoxy only.

Sisters were clamped on both sides and left to cure. I then broke out the planer to mill some cedar for the deck. I had some cut-offs from the BBSB work more than 15yrs ago! The cut-offs were milled to thickness then ripped so that the pieces would follow the deck without having to be backed out. I then painted the cedar with epoxy, then added cab-o-sil to thicken for glue.

This is where it stands. After sufficient curing, I will fair and the lay a layer of glass.

Great repair! Sorry you had to do it but you have certainly taken the right approach.

See you in Tuckerton!

This morning it was still tacky (what I was hoping!), so mixed up more epoxy with micro balloons to fill the cloth. One more sanding and should be ready for paint this weekend.
