TDR (Tangentially Duck Related): Cerakote

I am considering a new shotgun, and looking hard at the Franchi Infinity. I love my Franchi O/U, and am sick of my Beretta 3901's failures to feed in cold and damp weather.

They offer the Infinity in a variety of camo options, all of them with both plain and Cerakote versions, with the Cerakote about $130 more. I've never had a painted or coated barrel, and I hunt the salt a lot, so every shotgun I have ever owned has suffered some level of salt damage to the outside of the barrel.

Does the Cerakote offer any advantages in protection over the paint of a traditional camo? If so, it's easily worth a few bucks.

Jeff,

Paint or cerakote will both equally protect the metal from rust. I too largely hunt salt and hated having my gun constantly rusting so I buy painted guns for the salt. I have bought all my waterfowl guns prior to the proliferation of cerakote. If you are someone who is particular about the appearance of your gun (i am not, my guns looks like they have been through a few wars) I would go cerakote. While paint protects from rust just fine the paint tends to rub off and fade and now looks more white than camo

when refinishing a shot gun stock I use bees wax linseed oil turpentine , I all so use the same on barrels to prevent rusting.

Jeff, my buddy swears by cerakote . He applies as part of his career / profession (Gunsmith)

His cost to me as his friend is more than the $130 up charge from dealer . I would jump on it

Really depends on the cerakote application. Like every thing else some are better than others. At the least don,t leave that salt on finish.

I had my 870 which was 35 years old and has been hunted hard cerakoted 2 years ago since it was basically down to bare metal on 80% of it and was rusting when I just talked about duck hunting. I don't hunt the salt as much a I used to but the coating has held up well. I instucted the cunspith coat "anythign that can rust". and he did. It is starting to show wear in some spots such as the on the magazine tube were the pump slides on it but that was to be expected. Over all I would say it has been very durable. I am not easy on my gun and would recomend it.
