    What's on your Workbench? - July 2023

That is really cool Steve. Unique and well executed. I've been putting some long days in the shop and just recently finished up this Pintail rig.

Anyone know a rail hunting guide in NJ

Look for Carl Camp on Facebook and Kim Plummer . Those would be the guys you want to contact. I don't think they really advertise anywhere.

Kansas - Another Domino About To Fall In the Push to Reduce Non-Residents in Favor of Residents

It's a mix. Mostly younger Hunter's, but not all of them. Last year we had a big influx of Deerhunters turning to duck hunting for the first time. Those that I talk to attributed it to the fun of it, and the poor condition of much of New Jersey deer herd due to an outbreak of EHD. I would...

Kansas - Another Domino About To Fall In the Push to Reduce Non-Residents in Favor of Residents

Eric, I agree. That has always been my take. As much as non-residence can be annoying they do play a larger role in the purchase of ammunition, stamps gear etc. New Jersey has seen a large influx of new duck hunters the past few years, many who were never schooled in any etiquette or...

Anyone know a rail hunting guide in NJ

It depends if you're talking about clappers aka mudhens. Or the more preferable and traditional Sora rail. Sora only eat seeds like rice and yellow flower,( tickseed) and their prevalence is heavily dependent on those crops. Which is heavily dependent on rainfall that year. Last season was a...

Kansas - Another Domino About To Fall In the Push to Reduce Non-Residents in Favor of Residents

It's crazy, but it seems like it is happening all over. This has been discussed here in New Jersey. So far the members of the migratory bird council, myself included, have not given it much traction. However if these restrictions become the norm that take May need re-evaluation.

    Pondering my next build.

Good morning Steve, The search for the perfect pole never ends! The one in the picture is my heavy duty pole for thick vegetations. It is a 16 foot length of Douglas fir closet rod. It is one and a half inches thick. I used the draw knife to taper it from its full inch and a half thickness...

    Pondering my next build.

Nate, thank you for the thorough explanation. Using different materials rather than fiberglass makes perfect sense. That seems like a very interesting build but may be more of a project than one wishes to tackle. Looking at the Shellduck if you were able to arc the bottom I think that would...

    Pondering my next build.

Nate, the Shellduck looks promising, however that dead flat bottom would give me pause. I have pushed boats like that before and they tend to plow through vegetation rather than ride on top. And they are difficult to pivot on a turn. The most enjoyable boats I have used have gentle rocker front...

    Pondering my next build.

Nate, that is a beautiful boat and I love the lines. That's great Steve! He definitely would be if he were still around! I'll attach my favorite Eakins railbird seen below. Generally thought to be painted on the Maurice River in Southern New Jersey it looks pretty similar today other than...

    Pondering my next build.

I think you should look along the lines of the Delaware ducker. It was designed to do exactly all of the things that you mentioned. Many were built with lapstrake construction. But you shouldn't have any trouble taking the lines off it and using plywood or plank construction. It is a little...

Update on the Bianco double ender restoration

Thanks Eric, she is quite the looker. Over the weekend I repaired the floor and hatch cover. I got the last bit of paint on those as well. She is now complete other than oarlocks, oars and scull oar. I also need to fabricate the removable "trash rails" that many boats use on the front.( this...

Update on the Bianco double ender restoration

Thanks Rich, the effort, time, and knowledge to use these boats on waters both large and small, is definitely something that was acquired over a lifetime. It is pretty notable to me.
