I guess I'd stay in the boat! The places we hunt only have a couple feet of water at the top of flood. They do seem less likely to flush as the tide drops. We get them up by whacking the grass with the pole. Plus it's fun to make them squeal.

After I posted, I saw that you walked up clappers. Clappers and virginias is how we first started to walk them up when I was a kid. The old timers said we were nuts, and it wouldn't work. They were correct about the nuts part. :) The marshes we hunt them in rarely get enough water depth to push...

You got that right. But, if you can stand a change of pace, walk them up. Shorts, tee shirt and sneakers. You might be surprised how much fun and how effective it is. The huntable tide is extended past whats needed for the boat. Plus everyone gets to shoot. And the laughs never end when somebody...

I haven't been in several years. Reading your posts has me wanting to get out, I need to make the time. Rail hunting really is a special sport, "The sport of Kings" it was sometimes called.

The shells we used were modern hulls. The shotgun chambers and bores are essentially the same as guns manufactured today. I have some brass hulls for display, but I don't recall shooting any. I agree, most folks are too quick to shoot. The birds tend to fly 25 yards or so, the Clappers and...

It was my dad's "thing" starting around 1970. He bought a bunch of fine damascus doubles, which could be had for nothing. Many were bought for 50 bucks, some nice Claybroughs, Parkers and Greeners were a whopping 200. We shot ducks when conditions were right to bring them in close. These were...

Nice day of rail shooting! I think my favorite part is the ability to use guns that aren't generally suitable for ducks. A .410 can be good fun. Black powder breechloaders are fun too. The marsh gets covered with a blanket of smoke, just like it must have been back in the 1800s.

Jode, I love railbird hunting. That's a great old boat. You may have said in years past, but I've forgotten whether your boat has any rocker or is a flat bottom? I've had rail skiffs both ways, there's good and bad to each.

Thank you for reminding me. When I ordered the covers from Diane, I also picked up a large outboard motor camo cover. I bought a ProDrive boat/motor last year, I wanted a decent cover to use in the marsh as the unprotected engines don't like to get wet (rain, snow). That 40 hp engine is enormous...

    Little treasure found

I agree, we had one of those or identical back in the day. Last time I recall seeing it was when I was maybe ten years old. It had a jerk string to the blind. The wing flaps could be pretty realistic if you worked at it. I wonder why someone doesn't manufacture something similar today? Maybe it...

Roy, I have not tried chairs/lounges. Thought about it, but wondered how it would fit. Perhaps I should try one. What has worked best for me in these is a WetMutt dog kennel mat on the floor and a life preserver cushion behind your head. Many naps have been had over the years. I should add...

Finally got them painted. A couple coats of Parker DG, then dusted with rattle cans over a handful of ornamental grass to break up the squareness. More for me than the ducks. Looking at the photos, I may done just the opposite. I think I can live with it, old Mr. Black Duck will be the...

Only one of our sneakbox's had racks (stern), but decoys were stacked on the decks. Thinking back to when I was a kid sixty years ago, boxes being rowed, or grassed and towed to the hunt, had decoys on the rear deck and in the cockpit. When we motored decoys were up forward. I don't recall...

    neoprene jackets

Never wore a neoprene jacket other than a wetsuit. I can see where it might be cold if you sweat. One positive if a neoprene jacket is worn for duck hunting is flotation if you end up in the water. The opposite of a water logged traditional jacket dragging you down.

100% agree! Can't tell you how many times I've considered doing just that. Maybe when I retire, I'll spend the time to build a pair that way.

    Building a Gunning Coffin

Roy, You are correct, it's a tight fit for my boots. They do need to tipped a bit to fit. I tried leaving an open area in the deck on one build version. It bothered me looking at the boots sticking up. I had the uncomfortable feeling I might shoot my toes off. One positive to a deck is that it...

    Building a Gunning Coffin

Steve, Yours are beautiful boxes, refined far beyond mine. I build mine seat of the pants, the basic frames are similar each time but the finish is always a little different. I had planned to fit these with dodgers but am having second thoughts. As I mentioned above, we typically don't attach...
