    Dull Coat

Thanks so much gentlemen. Currently weighing the pro's and con's. It dawned on me that re-touching might not be so easy in the event they get dinged/chipped if I dull coat. Still trying to decide which way to do. However, if I do dull coat, it seems the Testor's is the way to go.

    Dull Coat

I'm in the process of completely rehabbing, restle coating, and re-painting a foam Brant gunning rig. Ideally I'd like to have this rig last forever. I've processed them as follows: 1) Patched/sanded with fairing compound. Heads were re-attached and some replaced with Liquid Nails. 2) Restle...

What's on your WORK BENCH - DECEMBER 2020

We're getting there. Using Steve's tutorial as my bible. So far 4 are complete, less some dull-coat spray. Trying to determine which brand I would like to use. My goal is to have this rig be passed to my grandkids someday far down the line. I had no idea how involved this process was. From...

    Toyota Coolant Leak

There really are not many areas where it can leak. If you check these areas, I bet you'll find your issue: Hoses where they meet the t-stat housing. T-stat housing. Intake manifold galley. Coolant pump and hoses where they come in.

    Toyota Coolant Leak

Leaking when cold signals contraction in a component. Seen it several times with cars, boats, and even tractors we own. First thing to check are all the hoses. Radiator returns, radiator to water pump, etc. Check the clamps. I'm sure you have but check them again. Our boat diesels leaked coolant...

12V rechargeable battery - to lithium or not to lithium

This is all I ever used. I debated putting an LED light bar in the front of the boat but then the issue of discharge rates, not having a motor-driven charging system, etc came into play. My headlamp does all I could ever need really. I use one of the triple-beam rechargeable ones from Amazon...

12V rechargeable battery - to lithium or not to lithium

I built a small power box for my Higbee which ran 2 LED front running lights and one LED stalk light. I used one of these...

What's on your WORK BENCH - DECEMBER 2020

Well, it's progress. Hope to have them restle coated, primed, and painted before Christmas.

    Admitting my mistake, need advice...

Preventative maintenance will be more important but really, galvanized or not, everyone who has a trailer should be doing this. I just get into the habit of washing off my trailer after EVERY dunk in salt. Takes literally 5 minutes. In winter, I run one of those collapsible garden hoses up from...

Black Brant Hunting on the Pacific Coast

Regarding brant calls, as Steve and others have said, a short-reed goose call works. Flutter your tongue as you apply pressure into the call and at the end give it a steady break. It's hard to explain. Also, just mouthing the call works too.

    Long Island Opening Week/Cooking Brant

I've not done the spicy snack sticks myself but know of friends who have and they say they're delicious. Smoker is coming some time after Christmas so I might have to give it a shot myself.

    Long Island Opening Week/Cooking Brant

I'm debating going this route with some divers as well. I have friends that have told me they have had sea-duck jerky and it is phenomenal as well.

    Long Island Opening Week/Cooking Brant

Jerky. All our geese get made into jerky and it comes out quite good. Secret is, breast them out, get the silver skin/fat/bloody meat out, and get them right into a good brine. We usually pre-soak them overnight in regular water in the fridge first. Then brine them in equal parts kosher salt and...

    Quick Release Snap Swivals

What you are referring to as others have said is longline clips. Often used for diver longline sets. Memphis Net and Twine is one retailer. Another site is Catch-All Tackle. https://catchalltackle.com/long-line-clips-stainless-steel-with-swivel-50-pieces/

    Good marketing wins the day...

I actually followed this controversy in the Meateater Podcast. The title is called "Half-Life of Never." The issue was Pebble Hill Mine. Lots of very big, big players in the mining industry were trying to put the largest open pit strip-mine right at the base of the largest headwaters of 75% of...

    Higbee Weight Capacity.

With you, motor, fuel, and gear, you should be right at that 300 lbs and I would try to adhere to that. That boat is definitely not a 2 person boat. Higbees are not known as being the most stable rigs out there. I am about 200 lbs. When I hunted mine with: Myself Motor Fuel 12-15 decoys Blind...

    Rowing a Higbee?

Actually, refer to this posting in the classifieds. You can see the flush mount oarlocks. This should get you going in the right direction. http://www.duckboats.net/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=333036;do=post_view;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;page=unread#unread

    Rowing a Higbee?

You can if you have enough "meat" in the top of the decoy rails. You definitely would need to bolt them through. I can't see just 5200 being enough to secure the oar locks in.

    Rowing a Higbee?

Well, going off my picture, it likely wouldn't be too bad to install a set. As I mentioned, I unbolted the clamps to use the hole to thread a cord through. They actually had these bushings/inserts...
