    I Need A Vehicle Change...

Same here, except I am still driving my 2011 Frontier and (over)spending on repairs--all while watching the body rust that comes from 13 years of driving in Maine winters slowly expand. I just can't bring myself to spend $40k+ on a truck with a bunch of crap I don't want, but in looking at the...

    KUIU waders review

You’d feel different if you lived in Maine or Montana or Minnesota, assuming those $800 waders actually keep you warm and dry.

    KUIU waders review

I do not, but I have never suffered from cold feet. Light liner socks, good wool socks, neoprene wader bootie, and a wading boot. As long as my feet stay dry, and I've got enough layers on topside, I'm comfortable.

    KUIU waders review

I'm always shocked that anyone prefers boot foot waders over stocking foot waders with wading boots. I came to waterfowling after several decades of fishing and working in waders, and over in the fishy world, almost everyone prefers stocking foots with wading boots. Much more support if wading...

    Very lucky day for me

A big old bird like that around here would get all my hunting partners talking about "Canadian Red Legs". Now I've got proof that at least some of those big old late season birds are local. (Not that any Maine hunter would actually accept an argument made with New Jersey evidence . . . LOL!)

    Lake Contour map App

I think at least one of the depth sounder manufacturers offers an app. So far as I know there is no link to lake depth maps, but I've been very happy with the GAIA GPS app for access to topo maps, marine charts (though the new version of NOAA charts really have lost of detail--thanks to NOAA...

We all read the tragic news of those that duck hunt and loose their lives pursuing the sport. Here's a story we can learn from.

THIS. And a lot of kayaks sold as hunting and fishing kayaks feel stable because they have flat bottoms so are not "tippy", but when leaned can reach a point of no return all at once. And any kayak or canoe is at risk if caught crosswise on an obstruction in heavy current.

    Aluminum version of Gheenoe?

No experience with Gheenoes. Lots with various square stern canoes, Scott duck boats, and Grumman Sport boats, but all with standard outboards. I would not stand to pilot a square stern canoe smaller than about 20’—but hull design matters as much as length. You could stand in a Scott duck...

Weapon for Shooting Beaver at Night

The weapon, of course, is not the most important part of the strategy.

Weapon for Shooting Beaver at Night

My woodchuck experience--a smaller but similar animal--is that only head shots with .22 CCI Stingers are a sure kill before they dive back in the hole. In Maine, beavers can only be trapped during the regulated trapping season. Only state officials and licensed animal control officers can trap...

Weapon for Shooting Beaver at Night

Forgot to post a link to the Beaver Deceiver--I suspect this is something that has been "invented" many times with variations. https://beaverdeceivers.com/

Weapon for Shooting Beaver at Night

Alabama is of course very different from Maine, but up here if there are other beavers nearby and if the site remains suitable for beavers to dam, the site will be recolonized pretty quickly unless you can sustain a lot of removal effort. Check out designs for a device that is known locally...

    Wader leaking help

An easier way is to take the waders into a dark room, and shine a bright light inside them. You'll see a faint glow through gortex and nothing through neoprene. Any bright spots of light you see are leaks. With the neoprene, stretch it out some to help see them. They will be obvious on the...

    New Skeet gun rec?

Soon after I bought my first 390--from Walmart, for about $500--they cleaned them all out. Towards the end, I could have picked up a 20 for about $400. Still kicking myself.

    New Skeet gun rec?

+1 on the 1100/1187 suggestion. I like my Beretta duck gun, but finding replacement parts is a PITA. When I need to replace a barrel after a stuck wad damaged mine, it was cheaper to buy a new gun than a replacement barrel.

    Interesting Gadwall

Gorgeous black duck! Like you, I am very conservative in what I count as a hybrid for bag limit purposes. Two clear white lines on the speculum, lots of green on a drake. A group of four of us returned to the launch a few years back and were met by the game wardens. It was back in the 1...

    Wader dryers?

I wear Gortex waders with neoprene stocking feet, and if hung in a heated space inside out they dry in a couple of hours. Never thought about needing a drier. OTOH, I just bought two pairs of rubber boots--ankle high Muck boots and knee high Lacrosse--and they won't dry for days. May need to...

    Duck Hunter Drowns on Guntersville

You underestimate me. I'm enough of a luddite that I'd go back to horse and buggy with stick to push against the wheel in a minute. 🤣 In a long ago part of my life I was a competitive swimmer, and I used to swim ocean races, including in Maine. I held a course record in one local race from...
