    Lou Tisch/LSB/FME Paint?

Found an email address and sent a message. Will try calling if I don't see a response. But Gary's response is encouraging. The FME is great stuff.

    Lou Tisch/LSB/FME Paint?

Does anyone know if Lock Stock and Barrell is still in business? Or if not, whether there is another source for the FME boat paint Lou Tisch used to sell? I used his paint on my glass over wood sculling boat and it has been incredibly durable, but is in need of touch-up not. I've also just...

Change To Federal Mallard Pop Goal and Impact on Seasons

I assume it was AHM that took us from 1 black duck to 2 here on the Atlantic. As a hunter who sees at least 10 times as many black ducks on my coastal hunts as I do mallards, and often hunts dawn or sundown on snotty days with fog and rain in low light, that was a game changer. In the old days...

Change To Federal Mallard Pop Goal and Impact on Seasons

My sense is that once you have that level of pressure on public resources, there is no option but some kind of mechanism to manage it. There are a lot of models out there for how to do that in ways that don't result in either chaos or exclusive access. To name a few--none of which are...

Change To Federal Mallard Pop Goal and Impact on Seasons

That's useful stuff, Brad. Can you provide a little more detail on what's on that chart? Looks like fishing effort is on the x axis. What is the y axis? Total harvest? Population size? And what are the lines labeled a and b, and the two unlabeled lines? I'm in the camp that would gladly...

    Meet Max

I once staffed a booth at the Maine Sportsmen's Show right after my mother acquired a Boston terrier puppy. I can't remember why, but she needed me to puppy sit that weekend, so I sat in my booth with "Nicholas" in a crate. (For the record, he was not a dog I ended up liking much. LOL!) He...

Change To Federal Mallard Pop Goal and Impact on Seasons

Fundamentally, those are both about the responses by huners and mangers to declining amounts of habitat. As always that's a different story in different places, both because areas with more development are losing habitat a lot faster than those without it, and because state and local land...

Change To Federal Mallard Pop Goal and Impact on Seasons

I think one of the issues may be that while hunter numbers are down, the people who are hunting are hunting more. If this guess is correct, tracking hunter numbers is not a good predicter for either crowding or overall harvest. I'd be interested what the annual surveys tell us about long-term...

    Meet Max

Train him up! Woodcock, quail, snipe and rails are all small . . . . .

    Only slightly goose related

Power back last night after supper. Snowed again over night--not much but the bare patch is covered and the poor robins and woodcock are going to starve. Mutual of Omaha show has moved to the kitchen window, and it's only crows in the compost pile fighting over yesterday's kitchen scraps. I...

    Meet Max

My in-laws have a Shih Tzu. Nicest little dog you could ever have-perfect for an elderly couple, but not much of a retriever. Loves chewing on balls, but won't chase one, and if you toss one towards him he ducks instead of catching.

    Only slightly goose related

BIG blizzard up in Maine the last two days. 16" of heavy wet snow, with wind. About 250,000 Maine power customers, including me, are still without power. We've been running the generator and it will hopefully be back tomorrow. Yesterday, outside doing round 1 of shoveling, in snow that was...

Change To Federal Mallard Pop Goal and Impact on Seasons

This, from Eric: "Waterfowlers in general have selective memory and that drives expectations, and especially dissatisfaction." Add all other hunters, plus commercial and recreational fishers, plus bird and wildllife watchers. For most people, the best day they ever had is the way it always...

    Gobble Gobble in every tree

No gobbling here yet. Usually mid-April. Hard to know this year. We had woodcock peenting last week, then a foot of heavy wet snow, and the last 2 days 2" of rain of that have pretty much melted all the snow. I'd say we are back to something like normal for early April--with another big snow...

    Grumman Sport Boat--HP recommendation?

Thanks all. Only thing I disagree with is the internal fuel tank. Maybe larger and newer motors, combined with better efficiency of a 4 stroke motor, preclude this, but when I ran a 3.5 HP on my sculler, it was common to burn more than a tank of gas in a morning of hunting. Nothing spells...

    What's your preference

Dark and bitter for me. Just a hint of sweetness.

    Grumman Sport Boat--HP recommendation?

Depends a lot. Fishing, some of my use will involve long runs, often starting by running 6-8 miles upstream to float my way back down. I fish some big lakes where I might make 4-5 miles runs. Ditto for some of my salty duck spots.

    Covering ugly welds

Or duct tape. As a bonus, other folks at the ramp might you think you built the platform out of fence posts and duct tape. I've seen worse on some clammer's boats.

Between this and your reply to Dani, you may be the new Tom Scholberg! Thanks!

    Grumman Sport Boat--HP recommendation?

Additional research has raised some new issues. I reached out to a friend who has been running a sportboat for decades, and who strongly advocates for (1) no need for more than 6 HP; (2) the lightest motor possible, preferably a 2 stroke for this reason; and (3) a two cylinder motor rather than...
