That is the same question I have been pondering today. What's next? Where do I stop? I don't know. With every bit of instruction I want to take it further but I fear the next thing I change could ruin what I've already done. I like the realistic look but I know that these are going to be hunted...

Do you know of a place to get a good view of the underside of a bill?

Well I put down the dremel and picked up a knife to attempt some work on the bill and gave him a quick sanding and here's the result.

I have a decent drill press. Will that suffice for the padded sander?

I gave Willie a couple calls and left him a message trying to order a padded sander and another bit but I never did hear back. I assume he is busy with all those decoy shows you guys get out east. I'll give him another call cause I would really like to get my hands on one. So far the entire...

I am planning on putting eyes in the bird. I was going to do the whole bird in cedar. I have 2x8 boards that I was planning on laminating together tonight. I still have a few more things to buy such as sealer, paints, wood filler for the eyes. I saw a tutorial where a guy took half round...

Did some more work on it last night. I took some more off the top but was a little sqeemish diving into those cheeks. I took some more off from around the cheeks giving them a little more definition. I tried to remove some wood from the top back portion of the head to give the more pronounced...

Red Cedar is what it was sold to me as. I picked up three boards and this one had no knots in it but was a much deeper color then the other two so I thought it would work for head stock. The other two boards look white compared to this one. Thanks for all the pointers guys I really appreciate...

When bandsawing the head out I was a little unsure of my bandsaw skills so I didn't cut right on my lines and left some room for error. Every since then I have been trying to get it back down to size and have been having a heck of a time with it. Should I leave my cheeks alone on this and just...

    This weekend in Southern Iowa

It was a couple of fun days. Saturday morning we set out a spread of roughly 700 socks. We had a couple hundred TNT's but we were unable to drive into the field due to some snow melt so we opted to leave those in the van. It was a long walk in the muddy field bringing it all out especially...

Turning some into sausage and the rest went a wonderful asian family who had a great big plucking party. I don't mind giving a few away especially when they eat every part. It doesn't hurt either that they feed me at their Asian steakhouse as well.

    Decoy Carving Central Iowa

I think I may have found what I was looking for. 2 x 8 x 8ft boards of kiln dried, clean western red cedar. Eight bucks a board. A fencing company is where I ended up finding the material.
