PLEASE READ - Lee Harker Legacy Fund

This all took place well before my time here but I just read the thread.... wow. This is amazing. I'm not gonna lie it brought tears to my eyes. Blake is one lucky young man and I hope he's still killing ducks.

I’ve killed a crap ton of black ducks. I’ve also killed a good many black mallards. They never seem to be the same. Killed them with completely green heads and a mostly black duck body. Killed them with half green heads and a body that's a mix of both... etc etc. I would assume any cross breed...

Nice collection. If I killed that mallard here I'd call it a black mallard. Also the biggest thing that stuck out to me is that mini swan on the shelf. That thing is awesome! :ROFLMAO:

    October Workbench

Use to be an old man here that carved his whole life. Rumor was at one point he was living in a single wide with his wife and 2 sons. Apparently no shed to work out of at the time so his bandsaw was in his bedroom.

    October Workbench

Oscar Carroll of Back Bay, VA decoy carving fame used cypress knees for all his decoy bodies 100 years ago. Lends itself to some neat character in some of the bodies.

I still put 1/4" lags through the body and into the heads of all my cork gunners. Shelf birds usually just get a deck screw.

    Live Decoys Making A Comeback?

Man I don't even like spinners.... for that matter it would suit me just fine to never hunt over anything that isn't hand made again.

    neoprene jackets

I've got an old Herters neoprene jacket I've had for probably 25 years. I don't get to hunt much anymore so I have worn it in a couple years. The only thing I ever used it for was the boat ride. It was great for blocking wind and spray. I've never had to wade much the way we always hunted but I...

    What's on your Workbench - DECEMBER 2023

If you go back a couple pages there was a thread in late June about canvas decoys, title was something like canvas brant and scoters. There's some good pictures in there of the structure of a canvas decoy. I believe there is also a link to an old thread about how to make canvas decoys by Chuck J.

    Balsa block

Yeah I was referring to what guys up the shore call cottonwood... paulonia (sp?). Had no idea that was balsa but like I said I've never used any of it.

    Balsa block

So balsa and cottonwood are the same wood? I did not know that. Never used either one.

    Canvas Decoys. Scoter and Brant

I use to know a man that had 2 of the prettiest canvas swan hanging in a big garage type building on his property. I lived those swan but never knew who made them until I went in The Bird Store in Nags Head one day years ago and he had a rig of Johnny's geese in there for sale. As soon as I saw...
