Just acquired a couple pelts I would like to tan. I would like to tan them myself and have found recipes and methods including wood ash, brain, and salt/battery acid. Anybody have personal exprience doing this resulting in a preserved, soft pelt? thanks

I think you're right on the identification. There are no poisonous look alikes, although some have commented it can cause stomach upset when growing on certain tree species (not sure which ones). Pick the small ones as they are more tender.

We have many goldeneye here in WA State, but I don't see them bunch up on our rivers in groups larger than about 15 until the barrow's arrive after the season. I made this cogo drake out of foam last summer and floated him this past season. Sorry about the poor pic quality, but you can get the idea.

I have never laid eyes on that many goldeneye silly's in one place! I think the bill color varies with the season-as breeding season gets closer the bills color up as early on most are all black.

Some with wood heads and others with burlapped foam heads. I think they ride as good or better than my corks. I like to carve mine rather than buy molded bodies-just a personal choice. I'd be glad to answer any questions
