An introduction

Hi All,
I am new to the site and thought that I should take a minute to introduce myself.
I am building my first boat, which as many of you can recognize it as a Gator Duckhunter.
This has been a very rewarding project and has helped considerably with the cabin flu.

My wife and I have a herd of 4 German Shorthair Pointers that are trained as versatile dogs.
They not only love upland hunting but are also water hounds.

I am really looking forward to putting them on some ducks this fall.

Here is a progress picture of my Duckhunter. I started my boat back in November 08.

Looking forward to corresponding with everyone.

Gary that looks to me like you will have a nice looking duck hunting machine in progress...Keep the pictures coming through your progress..Welcome to sight there is an endless amount of knowledge on duckhunting and just life overall...If this type of knowledge would have been available before the federal government stepped in to regulate duckhunting we would have been discussing duck hunting today...

Have a great time building your future hunting boat,

Kristan

Great looking duck boat. Where are you located and would you object to a visit? I've owned and hunted German short haired dogs.

Wis Boz,
great to see a fellow Cheesehead on the site
I am in the Viroqua area, about 25 miles SE of Lacrosse.
Stop by any time.
I will PM you with a ph #

Nice start on the boat. I have the plans along with half a dozen others on my desk. Can't for the life of me make up my mind which to build. Any pictures of the GSPs? I have been enamored with them since my 1st one over 30 years ago. Great dogs.

Here is a picture of our herd that we took just before we took the Christmas tree down.
It was like herding cats :)

HMMMM....methinks theres a wannabe in the group! Nice looking pack of Shorthairs. You seem to have the different colors pretty well covered. How old is the distinguished looking old boy on the right.?

Denny, the old gal on the right is 12 years old.
That is Molly, aka. doofus.

She has tolerated 7 German Shorthairs romping all over her.
She has also survived a bout of cancer. We were told 5 years ago that she would only live about 1-2 more yrs.

Gary,
Welcome to the site. There are a few of us in the area, (LaCrosse, Black River, etc).
Ya know, by the looks of that picture a guy might be inclined to think that a TREAT was involved!!! ;^) Nice lookin bunch, specially the grand dame on the right.

George

Hi George,
Nope, no treats involved. (just a squeeky toy)
We start our pups out learning the down command, and that down means down, no moving, until the release command. (our guys are force fetch trained)
They are not taught the sit command until they are steady on point.
Not having children of my own, these guys are my pride and joy, and I hope that it doesn't come off as bragadocious.
The 3 dogs on the left hand side of the picture all received Natural Abiltiy prize I honors through NAVHDA. The youngest earned her's at 7 months of age. Part of the testing for these honors are for work in the water. (these guys love to retrieve ducks)
I do not have a lot of duck hunting experience except for jump shooting woodies while grouse hunting.
Having a duck boat that I have built will be an inspiration to do more waterfowl hunting with these guys, and I am looking forward to the input that you guys can provide with the "wetter side" of bird hunting.

Welcome Gary,

Looks like you have a nice start to your build.

I knew a couple of guys from out there back in school. Burns family in particular. Very pretty country out there. I have gone through it several times going from Mineral Point to Black River Falls with my uncle. Good buck hunting out there too.

keep posting, these guys will help with questions, but we are all admittedly picture guttons.

Eric

Life maybe too short to hunt over plastic decoys but it's definitely too short to drink canned beer. I like my beer in glass longnecks or on draught.
Best,
Harry
PS my first .22 target was a Miller High Life can. That was 52 years ago.

Gary,

Welcome to the site. This summer we'll be having another duck boat builder's gathering at Goose Island, south of La Crosse. You'll have to bring your finished Duckhunter along so we can see how it performs.

We generally have quite a few beer cans that need retrieving, so you may want to bring the dogs too.

Rick

Rick, Do you have a date yet? My wife is starting to make plans and I don't want to miss this year. BTW Gary, welcome to the best place on the whole WWW

Rick Rick, Do you need volunteers to empty the beer cans? Keep me posted, it would be fun to meet a few guys from the neighborhood.
