Anyone in the Jacksonville Fla area that can do me a favor?

I bought a spindle shaper and am going to have it shipped from Jacksonville. Fla to Huntsville, AL. I have a shipper who will do it for a reasonable price but he requires the shaper to be sitting on a pallet in order to get forks under it to load it in the truck. The seller wanted to only deal locally so I told him I'd make it easy on him and handle the shipping details. Had to do it or the great deal would have slipped away.

So I am in need of a favor. I would be extremely appreciative if someone could pick up a pallet (I'll pay for it) and bolt the shaper to it. The shaper weights about 350 pounds but two people can easily tilt it and slide a pallet under it. Is there anyone here that can lend a hand? If I can't work out the details I plan to drive over one weekend (9 hrs) and tackle it myself. If I wasn't having to travel so much at work I'd do it next weekend but I'll be in San Diego.

Thanks to anyone who can lend a hand. If not, no biggie, just thought I'd ask.

Eric-

Where is it? When would it need to be done? I might be able to get my dad to help me out, depending on where it is. just lemme know and I'll ask him if he'd help me out.

It's right off I-95 at 2128 Atlantic Blvd. The seller actually lives in some commercial property. As for timeline there is no rush. The seller won't let it ship until the check clears. He recieved the check on Wed so I figure it will be 10 days before he says it's okay to ship. He's flexible on pickup date. I just need to notify the shipper as to what date it's ready and coordinate the pickup with the seller.

I don't want to burden your dad and you, or anyone for that matter. If it is not a problem or hassle I'd really appreciate it. If it is, just say so and no problem. I'd be happy to pay a local service to palletize the shaper so if you know a place that will do this that will get me on my way. So far all the shipping places I've tried insist it's already done.

Thanks Dani.

I talked to my dad and he said that he would like to take a look at it, the area...where it's sitting or what not. It wouldn't be difficult to get it on the pallet, but he wants to make sure that he will be able to do the bolting and such. He doesn't know anyone or company that does palletting. But he said he would take a look at it, not sure when, but probably next week we could go down there. I think it's near one of my favorite hardware/gun shops so it's no big hassle to go down that direction :^)

Whomever does it...go to a nice little local lumberyard and ask for a shingle pallet..we are glad to give them away (except to pallet slugs who re sell them and make a mess picking through them). If someone brought that shaper to my yard..I'd help them fix it to the pallet and shrink wrap it on..I'd probably even band it down to the pallet with some blocks of wood to protect i the paint....but that's just me.

Thanks. If you can let me know when you are going down there I'll see if I can coordinate with the seller. I hate that I'm having to bother anyone with this but the seller was really really leary of doing business long distance. I told him I'd make the trip myself or a friend would handle it. The person I knew who was going to be in Jacksonville with an empty trailer headed my way fell through so now I'm looking for a means that keeps the seller happy. The last thing I need to do is piss him off and have him mail my check back and say sorry, I found someone local.

Banding it would be good but not many people have those banding tools at their disposal. I was thinking four machine bolts from the shaper cabinet base to the pallet would keep her secure. If this thing was in Sturgis you'd have me well taken care of.

Sure, its a duck-related forum, but its a whole lot more than that.

A whole lot of friends that just happen to live all over the country...

I actually contaced them. They are good and came in with a bid of $260. But the shaper has to be on a pallet or they won't touch it. No way to get their forks under it without the pallet. I listed the shaper on uship.com and got a few bids, the best so far being $210. Once again though it's has to be on a pallet.

If you bolt it to a pallet, make sure the pallet has strong slats. I bet if whoever picks it up for you would take it to a "human" lumberyard..they would metal band it free..or for a reasonable charge...and be glad to get rid of a non-returnable shingle skid.

I would beat FreightQuote up a bit and see if they will BEAT the other place. They always work well with me. Ask them for my rep if you want......Adam Schwartz. I'll give you his phone number if you want.
I definitely understand the need for a pallet. When I need a pallet, I hit commercial places around here i.e. Elec. Supply Houses, etc. As Lee said, lumber yard too. I'd think Dani could sweet talk the guys around there to help her. :)

Banding it would probaly be a stronger safer way to handle it. the shipper may have a banding tool or you could stp by a pakmail or lumber yard and ask to get them to band it for you

Best pallet would be a grocery pallet. Three hardwood stringers 48x40 7 -3/4' boards on top 5-3/4' boards on the bottom. The shaper could be laid on it side. The weight of the shaper would keep it from moving. If you wanted to play it safe a couple of inexpensive nylon tie downs. A piece of card board or other soft material on top of the boards to save that beautiful paint. I made thousands of those pallets years ago when I had a pallet factory. You should be able to pick one up in any factory district. Might cost of few dollars or a lot of charm. I don't know what they cost new any more but they use to range from $ 4.50- $7.oo

Eric-

I'll see when my dad can do it. He may be in NC most of the week (we'll find out today) because he's having to go up there to work on an airplane that got struck by lightning. I'll let you know though

Eric-

See if it would be ok for us to come over Saturday morning to check everything out. Hope this isn't too short notice

I listed the shaper on uship.com and got a package deal that covered everthing. I should have the shaper Saturday. I really appreciate the offer to help but in the end won't need it. But the next time I buy a shaper in Jacksonville you're the man, err lady.
