Are there Ducks in Calif?

If I take this job offer and move to Huntington Beach California, will I still find some duck hunting somewhere nearby? How about Quail? I'm really interested to know and so is my new pup. I've spent most of my time in the areas of NE, SD, IA, WI, so the SoCal area is really unknown to me.

Thanks,
Keir

Nothing right out your doorstep. Add a four to six hour drive max and you will open up all kinds of opportunities. I'm about five hours to Huntington Beach, my daughter lives there. I've got fair duck hunting and lots of upland opportunity for quail, some chuckar and doves. There are opportunities as long as your willing to drive. Some area have lots of public acces and some are very limited.

I think that California shoots more ducks than any other state in the country. Plus they usually have close to the highest number of birds per person per season. Most of them are shot North of Fresno. But, there is also some good hunting in the south eastern part of the state.

For a sea-duck hunter southern CA can be great. There are many brds that work the S. CA shoreline, you just have to learn where you can hunt. CA has more protectwed shoreline than any other state and many areas are really off limits to shooting.
If you want other ducks, you will have to look a the grasslands northward.

Don't forget the Salton Sea in the desert between Palm Springs and the Mexican border. The Wister State Refuge used to be very good Teal hunting when I lived there in the 60's and 70's. Back then we were also able to hunt some really good private land (ranches) along the edge of the sea, I remember shooting teal, widgeon, shovelers (we called them a Salton Sea Mallard) and canvasback there.
