going to st. charles arkansas in january to duck hunt -- anybody familiar with that area -- anything fun to do there when the hunt is over, good places to eat etc.

I do but I'm not famiar with the St. Charles area. We typically hunt North East Ark in places like Black River and St. Francis River. You freelancing or going with a guide?

George, Not much in St. Charles itself. The grocery store/gas station has a pretty good short order kitchen. Has a monument to the single most deadly shot of the War of Northern Aggression which occurred there. Yankee gun boat exploded. DeWitt is the next town over but does not have that much for visitors either. Stuttgart is about 30 minutes away and you can visit Mac's Sportingoods, bring your wallet. Little Chef in Stuttgart is good eating. Craigs BBQ in DeVall's Bluff is great, be sure and order the hot sauce. January is the time to go. Are you hunting rice or timber?

Nope...we don't hunt ducks here in Arkansas. What are ducks?

Listen to what Jim said. Extracurricular activities are going to be "slim" and "none", unless your cabin/lodge has satellite tv, pool table, etc.

DeWitt is the closest town of any size, but that isn't saying much. Stuttgart is the next town, with Mack's Prairie Wings, RNT, Grand Prairie museum, Wal-Mart, restaurants, etc. Little Rock is (if I remember) in the 2 to 2.5 hour range away.

What days are you coming down? Might be able to hook up and have a bite to eat in Stuttgart...about 40 miles east of my house...especially on a weekend.

One thing I would consider bringing is a camera, and doing some driving around - some of the rice fields between DeWitt and Stuttgart can offer the chance for good pictures, depending on weather, etc. Just get a State map and you can't get too terribly lost, especially if you stick to pavement.

going with POPA outfitters -- another fellow has hunted with them in the past and enjoyed the hunt -- i guess we can hunt either rice or timber -- up to them i guess

macks was on the list of places to go

if there is not much else to do i guess a card game and cold beer would be in order -- there will be 12 of us going doen there from michigan -- and we usually can make our own entertainment if none is around

glad to hear that january is the right time -- we'll be there on the 12-13-14th. (or maybe not for me since i'm about to become a grandpa for the first time and my daughters due date is the 9th. -- daughter and baby get first priority for sure, since first grandchild happens only once)

POPA Duck is a pretty good group. You should be well served. As for extracurricular activities, you've pretty much got three choices. Go to Stuttgart to Mack's Prairie Wings Store, go to the casino in Helena or West Helena or whatever it is, or stay in the cabin and relax. Dining? There's the country store. You'll probably go there for breakfast. Heart attack in a buffet kind of food. Think they were having fish fry's and even crawfish on weekend nights at the buffet. My advice is bring along good stuff to fix for yourself in the cabin and DIY. Don't remember if POPA Duck caters in their lodge. Let me know when you're going to be there and I might drift on down. Need to burn some vacation in Jan and it's got as good of hunting as most anyplace in Ark.

You better drift your happy hind end over towards White Hall if you're coming to Arkansas in January!!!

I want to see a happy, muddy, wet Lab picking up ducks...

I am also going to Ark in January. Get to hunt a private club near Holly Grove.

The BBQ place in Devalls Bluff doesn't look like much from the outside but it is very good! And there's a place across the street that makes fried pies. My cholesterol is going up just thinking about it.

i think meals come with the trip -- just wondered if there was a shouldn't miss kind of resturaunt that i should look up

mac's is on the to do list --- and like i said we are pretty good at entertaining ourselves as long as there is a deck of cards available -- poker and eucher and cribbage while away hours

thanks for the input guys --- even if i had to prod it out of you --- LOL
