Assateague in early April...

We are planning on running down to Assateague first week of April and I'm having trouble finding what catchable fish are around then. As for fish, I'd be most interested in something good for catch and release into hot oil. I can find info on stuff like rockfish and red drum, but I was wondering if there is anything more catchable from shore for a family vacation. Next step is obviously calling bait shops, but I was wondering if anyone had any info/advice. Crabbing opens April 1, but as I understand it crabbing should be very slow then. I can't get super excited about clams, given that we have great clamming here.

Thoughts?

To bad you were not going around the 3rd week of April. You could drive 20-30 minutes north to Ocean City and go the the Ward Foundation World Championship Carving Competition.

If you're heading down Chincoteague way, give Cap't Steve's a call. http://www.stevesbaitandtackle.com/. Great service. They've actually opened just for me to buy my hunting license a time or two. They keep up on everything happening around the area. You can get anything you need there too. I suppose, even if you're headed up towards Ocean City, they can still help you out.

April might be a little early for any inshore stuff, but maybe if the weather is warm...

Good luck and keep us posted!

Jon

Thanks Steve. From what I read should be the start of stripers. I like stripers fine, but I have boatloads of them locally at that time of year. :).
