Baikal O/U

Anyone ever shoot one of these Russian guns? A homeowner at a recent jobsite offered me one for $400. I don't know what model it is. All I know about it is that it has 28" barrels, 3in. chambers, screw-in chokes, and some special coating on the barrels and receiver. He claims he's only shot it once. He offered to let me take it out and hunt with it for a weekend before I made my decision so I'm going to take him up on it. I was just wondering what people had to say about the Baikal O/U's?...

Derek ,

My family has owned two. They are great shooting guns for the most part. One thing has happened to both shotguns with the stocks cracking. Not sure if the wood they use can last. New stocks go for $65 to 70 bucks. Remington took over the line , so hopefully the stocks will be better made.

They are good solid guns for waterfowling and will take plenty of abuse, If it was me I would take the guys hand off for it and would,nt think twice.
Take care and God Bless

Its all about Building that Bond.

The gun is probably a Baikal IZH-27 EM-1C. They come in several versions including a nickle plated receiver and sporting model with ported barrels.

I own one and use it as my spare gun. I do enjoy shooting it and have put thousands of rounds through mine. My fore stock has not cracked but I can see how it could as it is very thin. The action is a little sloppy although it does lock up very tight. It like the selectable ejectors. I quite often set it to extractor, especially when I use it at the range. It has shot a lot of skeet.

This gun is not comparable to a Browning but they are a good gun for the price.

great guns for the money. I've probably sold a hundred or so of them when working for a gunshop trying to get through college. So affordable, people would keep coming back and buying them in all gauges. Can't remember one ever coming back. My buddy of mine has one and has hunted hard with it for the past 7 years or so. The baikals before they were bought out, used to sell right around 400 new for their o/u. we sold a ton of their s/s too.

I have had my baikal O/U for approx 5 or 6 years and have hunted it hard on waterfowl. The last day of the 2nd MI season last year after firing both barrels, it froze and would not open/eject the empty shell casings. The first problem I've ever had. I sent the O/U to EAA (the US repair facility for the Baikal/remington Spartan). Within a week they returned my O/U....repaired and; it looked like a brand new shotgun. Plus, I had 2 new screw-in chokes (I sent it with none within). To my surprise....no cost for the repair. They did comment that it needed a "good cleaning".
It is not the prettiest o/u you will ever lay eyes upon; but it has been a workhorse in marsh/mud.

Have to agree with Brady. I used to sell these shotguns at a local sport shop. IMHO, the quality of wood they use is less than desirable. The "checkering" pattern on the wood is really rough.

Well, I picked up the gun on friday night and am taking it out in the morning for a 'test drive!' It looks real nice. Everything is real tight still, it doesn't even feel broke in yet. The guy had the stock and fore-end replaced and coated with multiple coats of verathane. It looks good. He claims he has shot 2 rounds through it and has sat in his safe since. It's an authentic Baikal (not remington version).

Also acquired an early 80's Mercury 7.5hp from my buddy's dad for free and got the carb cleaned out and some 'fresh' gas run throught it! I'm ready! I finally got "permission" from the "homefront" to head out!!! I'll try and get some pics. Supposed to rain but oh well, I'm goin' anyway!

Shooting a fancy double gun, you may need to upgrade everything, like a new flapper.

Well, didn't get to try out the gun too much today. I shot 4 shells and ended up with one nice drake wigeon. Nasty foggy and rainy early this morning. I did notice that the gun kicks way more than I'm used to but other than that I liked it.

I sailed the wigeon like a kite and he kamikazied into the lily pads almost 200 yds. away. Fortunately Xena saw him go down and was all over it!

Derek,
I am very worried about you. Now it is O\U shotguns, not to mention the home made decoy. But the self built boat blind is over the top.
I am concerned that you may be hanging out with a crowd that is way too into duck hunting and not enough duck shooting.

This can lead to a distain for all things mojo, and god forbid plastic. It also leads to being distracted from hunting and taking too many pictures.

Be very careful at this point not to get caught up in building a boat.

Also watch out about the poor children. They may catch the same thing if you are not careful.

Xena looks great and the set up with the boat must be a blast compared to having to walk in to all the spots.
Very nice photos on the hunt.
Thanks for posting.

I know right?! I've been thinking about making you a bluebill foamer from my du mold and sticking the wind powered wings from my flapper in there!
