Been painting decoys...

Finished up my first decoy, some of you might recognize it, I posted some pictures a while back while I was carving it. The lighting in doesn't do the irredescence on the head justice. The bill is still a bit blocky and the eyes are a little bugged out, both items I believe I have improved on (some at least) on the next two blocks I carved, which are now getting painted. Any pointers are always appreciated, as I have another 11 blocks in various states between the painting table and bandsaw.

Overall I am quite happy for my first bird, although I know I can (and will) improve with time.

Anyone else use Jansen's glaze to seal their paint? Willie recommended 50/50 with water to dull it down a bit but it still seems a little glossy to me. My wife told me it will dull with age (and she is usually right.)

Chuck,
No Buffler I know would pass up the chance to land next to that bird. Esp if you cut up about five more and put them off to the side or just inside your other divers like Lou shows. Only thing keeping em out should be you and your old smoke pole. No negatives that I see that would hurt you in the hunting department. Keep at it.

I use Jansens Glazing medium.....I usually run it about 60/40 - water/glaze. I say about because I don't measure it, just eyeball it.

Nice bufflehead BTW!!!

Thanks for the complements guys.

Bob, although I have 1 more buffie on the painting table right now, I have switched gears to carving puddle ducks. I started with 2 buffleheads figuring that they would fit through my bandsaw without a riserblock and would be easier to paint as a first timer than doing teal. I have 6 cork woodies started and 5 mallards ready to run through the saw (bottom boards and tail boards are glued in.)

Josh, does the Jansen's glaze dull any with time? I measured mine with a clear Fugi film canister (film...what's that). Made a couple of evenly spaced marks on the side with a marker. Wasn't sure how it would dry, figured I'd start with Willy's recomendation but wasn't sure how much further to dilute it.
