Boat Project

I have a home built skiff that a friend built and he only glassed the seams and then painted it. I love this boat and want it to last so I would like to know if anyone has advice on glassing the whole thing. Can I just scuff the paint and then epoxy or do I need to completely remove the paint. Also, they used a generic brand of epoxy and I would like to use West. Can the West go over the old stuff? Any advice would be appreciated.

What I would do is sand her down to bare wood on the painted sections and sand off the paint on the taped seams. 6 oz cloth and epoxy should do well. I've never seen generic epoxy but don't think that just because you spend twice as much as you should for it that West system is any better than the less expensive epoxies. RAKA and US Composite are both thought of very highly on this forum and are quite a bit less expensive than West.

I've used RAKA epoxy on two boats and have been very satisfied with it's performance.
