Boat repower question....

Thought I'd ask here first. I've been looking for a project boat and I may have found one. I'd like to seal the out drive transom hole and add a swim platform/outboard motor plate on a 18' cuddy. Has anyone tackled this kind of project? Did you build or buy the motor board/swim platform. I'm thinking a 90hp to 115hp would be sufficent. Any manufacturers of a transom refit would be appreciated.

Before i lost my parker pilothouse to hurricane sandy i had intentions of sealing up the notched transom, repowering with a 225 yamaha four stroke and adding a armstrong bracket, they are fiberglass brackets that they sell or you can design and are very affordable . I think that would be your best option as far a a swim platform/bracket

Thanks Jay. I'll look into the Armstrong. The one draw back I see is I'll be trailering this boat so I'm a bit concerned on the weight cantilevered past the trailer. I'm still giving this some thought.

Most of the transoms of IO boats do not have any rear cant to them. So you would have to get some kind of shims to tilt the motor back to be able to plane the boat. Other than that it wouldn't be too hard. Just put in enough braces to hold the motor.

Ed, Armstrong marine is not too far from me, here in florida. I have used a few of their swim ladders on my build projects. They are very nice people to deal with. I have never seen a fiberglass Armstrong bracket, but many aluminum ones. Rich.

Tom,

Now that I'm looking for a bracket there are many manufacturers. One actually shows a dimensioned view on line. Not to worried about design parameters I guess. All have that I have found show a 12 to 15 degree angle on the motor board.

Rich,

As I mentioned I'm now seeing several variations of bracket. When I lived in Florida many of the work boats and CC had tube style brackets. One bracket I like mounts to the transom and then adds bracing through the outdrive hole and attaches to the stringers. Have you ever been commissioned to build an extension platform? What are your thoughts on hanging a 400-450lb motor 25"-30" off a flat transom?

Ed, I build big boats, I leave the specialty stuff to their respective experts. There are a lot of transom brackets with two of these monster outboards hanging out there. The added buoyancy of the solid brackets as opposed to the pipe or tube ones, I would think is a big advantage.. Rich

Ed,
Most of the larger boat trailers I have ever messed with were adjustable where you could move the axles to get the desired weight on the tongue.
