There are obviously some buffies who like to stick around for spring break. I saw a flock of about 20 on Mississippi Sound today. Saw one lone drake greater scaup and a merganser hen too. Some ducks just dont like to go home.

we finally started catching some crabs this week, and i got out on the water for the first time in several weeks. yesterday i saw the biggest flock of buffies i have ever seen, about 100, atleast. my boss, a 65 year old waterman, all his life, said he never had seen that many this lat in the year either. besides the big flock, i saw many groups of 5-10, and a whole load of mergansers as well. not sure if the mergs stay here year round or not...? this was on the seaside of the eastern shore here in va.

I love to see birds when they shouldn't be here. Had 4 Ringnecks the other day . 3 Dakes and a hen. The Drakes in breeding plumage. A good siting for Montauk at any time of the year. Still quite a few Red Brested Mergansers around but down at the Lighthouse only a handful of Scoters left . Very odd Montauk is a staging area for their treck North. Local Mallards and Geese are all on eggs.

This morning when I openned the blinds I was surprised to see 3 buffies swimming in the channel behind our house. Later, I counted 26 buffies swimming by the boat launch here on Gun Lake (that's SW Michigan for out-of-towners). I love it when they show up in spring dressed in full plumage! My 3 year old boy got a kick out of watching them dive and then pop back up to the surface in a different location. Oh, to be a child again....
