Burnt Cork Black Duck

Hi all,

This question is directed towards Steve Sanford since I followed his tutorial, but I would like to hear everyone's input so I figured I'd post it to the forum.

I made my first burnt cork decoy and I can't get the oily finish off of it. I'm not sure if that's just part of the finish or if I used too much linseed oil, haven't torched it enough etc.

Any input to help with the finish is appreciated.

Good morning, Rob~

The decoy will be a bit oily for the first season - you may need to grab it by the head for a while. It'll be slippery but it will shed water nicely!

This wears off over time. I imagine some of the linseed oil evaporates as it fully cures.

When I burn mine, I rub it thoroughly with a rag to take off the excess oil but also to mix the charcoal (lamp black) into the oil.

Got a photo? I will be carving and burning a few over the next few weeks.

Hope this helps,

SJS

Sorry it took so long to answer, traveling north for the holidays then busy with balancing hunting and family time made it hard to sit down on a computer.

Thanks for the help, I wanted to make sure I didn't miss a step, very possible for me to do. I'm finishing up the head then I will post pics I have a few others to post just need to resize the images.

Thanks again for the help!!
